Local Skaters Take 4th at Event in Sweden

Three local high school students were in March 16-17 to compete in the 2012 Junior World Challenge Cup (JWCC) in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The girls— Madison Rothweiler and Tasha Vo, students at Woodbury High School, along with Jordan Weiss from East Ridge—are members of Team Braemar, the 2012 U.S. synchronized skating national champions.

“Stepping on the ice is the most incredible feeling in the world,” Weiss said. “I am extremely honored to be representing the United States of America in the sport that I love.”

The trio and their team represented United States Figure Skating Association as Team USA and earned a fourth place in Team Braemar's fourth consecutive trip to the competition.

Coached by Pam May and Toni Swiggum and skating to a number titled “Blah Blah Blah Blah, Cha Cha Cha,” the team performed its short program to a crowd packed with fans from the U.S. The judges awarded the team a score of 49.94—putting the squad in third place after the short program.

The team later arrived at the Frölundaborg Arena to prepare for the free skate program. Their free skate program was awarded 95.14 points for a combined score of 145.08 points, placing them in fourth overall and just 1.22 points shy of the bronze medal.

Teams from Finland received the gold and silver medals, while Les Supremes from Canada took the Bronze.

Earlier this season the team won the Midwestern Regional Synchronized Skating Championships to advance to the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships, winning the National Championship. The team also competed at the French Cup in Rouen, France in February.

The public has the opportunity to watch the award-winning programs at the annual Spring Ice Show, which takes place at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 27, and Saturday, April 28, at Braemar Ice Arena. Tickets will be available at the Braemar Ice Arena box office. The cost is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and students.

Tryouts for the 2012-2013 season will be held at 7 p.m. on May 7 at Braemar Arena. For tryout information, visit braemarfsc.org or contact Jane Chaffee at jehchaffee@aol.com.
