Aldi Looks to Improve Site for New Woodbury Grocery Store
The discount grocer plans to open in the former Borders location.
Aldi is planning to upgrade the former Borders space, where it’s looking to open a new grocery store in Woodbury.
The discount grocer has submitted a building permit for interior and exterior improvements at the former bookstore at 8472 Tamarack Bay, according to a memo on the Woodbury City Council’s agenda for Wednesday. The estimated value of the work was not submitted.
Aldi in April made known its plans to open a new store in Woodbury.

A spokesperson from Aldi’s public relations firm told Patch that the anticipated grand opening date is late September or early October.
Aldi, known for its low prices, has more than 1,000 stores in 31 states, according to its website. Nearly 95 percent of its products are sold under exclusive Aldi brands.

Let the NIMBY-ing begin! LOL. The WBL one is not very clean and I wouldn't go there again.. but maybe the Woodbury one will be nice/clean? I was annoyed by having to rent the cart -- but when we went to Italy, you had to rent the cart at all the large grocery chains, so maybe that's not that big a deal?

First I'd heard of the cart-renting deal was when the first story posted. There were a few other quirks with Aldi I can't recall off hand. But some people swear by it.

From my memory of the suburban St. Louis Aldi, selection was an issue. They had most everything that you needed, but not a lot of competing brands. I don't remember it being like Hipster Joe's, where everything is the house brand.
It was okay, but I usually went to Schnucks or Dierbergs (St. Louis' version of Rainbow and Cub). I liked having more selection for about the same price, but considering that St. Louis grocery costs were less than up here, Aldis might be less expensive.

Yes and no. They have "separate and distinct ownership and operations" since 1960, but it was owned by Theo Albrecht operator of Aldi Nord (Aldi Sud is the operator of the US based Aldis and is owned by Theo's brother, Karl). Theo bought Trader Joe'sfrom a guy named Joe Coulombe in 1979.

I would like to know what the complaint is about having Discount retailers in Woodbury ? Keeping the poor people out? Not being good enough for Woodbury? I don't understand why.. Is Woodbury "too good" for stores like this? Sorry but this kinda quirks me.. There are people in Woodbury that need or want to save money.

Well said Ursula, i was thinking the same thing. Granted i moved to Woodbury from East St. Paul but not to get away from poor people, to get away from all the drugs and thugs. Been reading more and more about robbery, thefts and drug related incidents in Woodbury. Seems to me people should start worrying more about their kids then the discount stores wanting to come here.

You are absolutely right Ursula! There is nothing wrong with being thrifty. There is nothing shameful about frugal shopping and it's not just for the poor. Many a wealthy person has gotten where they are by being a smart shopper!

My friend shops at the St Paul Aldis and I have sampled their storebrand crackers and cookies. They are as good as the name brands, and some are even better than the expensive brands. I also have sampled their ice cream and cheese danish, also excellent. The price is about half of what I usually pay. I am thrilled to be getting an Aldis, as I am retired and love to save money. The money saved on groceries can be spent on something else.

We travel over to Hudson sometimes just to go to Aldi's. The savings are fantastic, The price of a gallon of milk alone makes the trip worth it! Especially this summer when all of the kids are home from school. Have had some terrific buys and it's a nice clean store.

I dont really know if Robert Street is closer but there is an aldi right across from white castle over by the CVS and Pep Boys(i think that's the name of it)

It's not about that with me, I just think the Aldi shops I have stopped in when in the twin cities have been dirty and I was NOT impressed. I personally am not happy with their decision to let them build here.

To be truthful, I would have said the same thing about Wal*Mart before the one opened up here in Woodbury. Up until then, in my mind it was a close battle between K-Mart and Wal*Mart as to which one was more sketchy. (In case anyone is wondering, the reason that I put an asterisk in "Wal*Mart" is because I saw one of my colleagues get savaged by the Wal*Mart real estate guy at a Planning Commission meeting in Missouri for using a hyphen. Old habits die hard.)
But, the City doesn't have much of a choice in the matter. Aldi's meets the zoning requirements, it apparently will meet the other inspection (building/health, etc.) requirements. So there's not much of a decision to be made. You can't deny them the right to occupy without a valid legal reason (unless you LIKE losing law suits.)

I shop ALDI in Hudson,Mahtomedi , St Paul and W St Paul. Never been dirty when I stopped there. Its a discount retailer. Do you expect carpet like at Byerly's? Walmart on the other hand is the messiest store in Woodbury. Junk laying around on shelves, endcaps of unorganized products, very hard to find anything or anyone to help you find it. etc etc.. So I guess its all how you look at it and what you prefer. I like ALDI!!!!!!!!!! Been shopping there as a kid in Germany and have been shopping there since they opened in MN.
