Call About Shoplifting at Woodbury Walmart Turns into Heroin Bust
The incident occurred in late November.
A report about a couple apparently trying to shoplift $20 worth of items from the Woodbury Walmart turned up heroin and drug paraphernalia.
Kevin Dale McMillen, 43, of St. Paul Park, now faces a felony drug possession charge stemming from the late November incident.
A Walmart employee called police on Nov. 24 after seeing a couple take $19.82 worth of merchandise and leave the store without paying, according to the criminal complaint. When approached by police, the woman, Shelby Jo Cook, 27, admitted to stealing the items, the complaint says.
While searching her, police found a syringe tucked into her sock, according to the complaint, and a search of their vehicle turned up a vial with white powder inside, another syringe and a glass pipe with brown residue. The items tested positive for the presence of heroin.
Cook told police that McMillen had the needle and he asked her to hide it for him when he learned police were going to arrive.
If convicted, McMillen faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
