Can You Really 'Catch' the Flu?

While you can't actually "catch" the virus, you can keep it at bay by keeping your body in balance.

How many times do you hear people say they "caught" the flu?

Most people around this time of year feel if they or their children come in contact with someone who has a runny nose and cough that they'll catch the influenza virus and become sick.

No, that's not true! If "catching" the flu were true, everyone would get sick this time of year.

The principle is that the virus will only take it's toll on you or your child if your body chemistry is out of balance.

Body chemistry? Yes, the balance of chemicals inside your body that determines every function for your entire body. In order to do anything, a certain chemical has to be produced in the right quantity at the right time and in the right place.

For example, you can look at your body like a trashcan. Inside the trashcan could be junk, rotten chemicals and an unhealthy environment. Or your trashcan could be a clean, healthy environment. Now for the flu to take its toll on your body it needs an unhealthy, rotten environment—just like flies need a trash can full of garbage.

If you want to get through this time of year without "attracting" the flu virus into an unhealthy environment, change the trash and get your entire family's body chemistry back into balance.

So, the next question is how do keep your body chemistry in balance? Well, you can watch what you put into your body and take an active approach to staying in motion to get rid of all the bad chemicals.

Chiropractic philosophy teaches us that the main system in the body that keeps our body chemistry in balance is the brain and nerve system. When they are free of interference, then and only then can your body's innate intelligence keep a perfect chemical balance—keeping you stronger and more full of vitality.

"While you can't actually "catch" the virus,..."

Really? Influenza IS contagious - meaning you CAN catch it. Lets take a look at the facts about spreading influenza from the CDC.

Please ignore this irresponsible, unscientific opinion piece. Yes, you can catch the flu and last year if you recall people all over Minnesota died from it. Information is available from the Minnesota Department of Health at http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/idepc/diseases/flu/basics/index.html

Sorry for any confusion, I would like to clarify my thought process in regards to "Can You Really 'Catch' the Flu?".

I believe there are two different discussions taking place:

1. Catching the Virus.
2. Becoming Sick from the Virus.

Yes the influenza virus can be passed from one person to the next. On the other side, where I was trying to take the column, you MUST have a weak enough immune system to become infected by the virus. Otherwise, every single person would become sick with the influenza virus every year. In no way am I saying people can not become sick or even die from this virus. Someone that becomes sick from the influenza virus and someone who doesn’t become sick both in theory might have "caught" the virus, but one was strong enough to withstand the infection and the other was not.

In conclusion, yes you can catch the contagious influenza virus, but you MUST have a weak enough immune system to become sick and even die from it.

The objective to the column is to logically show people that just because something health related is true for one person, doesn't make it true for all people. No this isn't a scientific column, this is more a philosophical column looking to help people realize some basic principles to how the body functions.
