The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday heard an update from the Community Development Department, approved a new liquor license for the restaurant at the Sheraton Hotel and made a few staff appointments.

It was a relatively brief meeting, which also saw the council approve new precinct boundaries for Woodbury.

Community Development

Community Development Director Dwight Picha and Roger Green, chair of the Economic Development Commission, outlined some of the 2011 highlights from his department, which included:

• a 31 percent dip in foreclosures;
• moving forward on Phase 2 development plans;
• continuing work on Bielenberg Gardens;
• a 3.4 percent increase in the number of jobs;
• further environmental-protection efforts;
• promoting the city through events, marketing materials and business outreach;
• 43 businesses that have opened and/or invested $50,000 into their companies; and
• a renewed focus on maintaining city infrastructure.

Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens thanked the volunteers to serve on city boards and commissioners related to the department.

“They give tirelessly of their hours and their expertise,” she said.

Sheraton Hotel

The liquor license for the Red Rock Grill at the Sheraton Hotel in Woodbury was renewed.

“Due to a foreclosure action at the property located at 676 Bielenberg Drive (Sheraton Woodbury), Wischermann Partners, Inc. was appointed as Receiver of the property,” reads a city memo. “Due to this change it is necessary for Wischermann Partners, Inc. to obtain a new liquor license.”

The former owner’s company has been the subject of an FBI and IRS investigation.

A representative at the meeting said the hotel isn’t going to close.

In other action, the council…

• appointed Mary Van Milligan and Tyler Burkart to the exempt position of assistant to the administrator.
• appointed Jim Triebold as streets superintendent and Liz Atherton as support services supervisor.
• authorized a budget amendment to the 2012 General Fund Administration Budget for $10,000 for the 2012 City of Woodbury Wellness Program.
