Original story
Fridley police this week arrested Hill-Murray high school head varsity football coach Mark Mauer for soliciting prostitution.
Mauer was one of 19 men charged Tuesday with misdemeanors during a two-day police operation at a Fridley hotel. He was booked into the Anoka County Jail and released. Investigators are preparing the cases for the city prosecutor.
The Fridley Police Department declined to confirm that the man they arrested is the Hill-Murray coach. Fridley Patch identified Mauer by matching public and published records of his name, date of birth, address and photo with the defendant’s booking information and photo.
Mauer, a Woodbury resident until recently, wasn't immediately available by phone Friday at Hill-Murray School, and another number from court records and published online has been disconnected or is no longer in service. Mauer did not appear at an eviction hearing for his residence in Washington County court Thursday.
Athlete, Coach, Council Member, Car Salesman
In 2012, his first year at Hill-Murray, Mauer led the Pioneers, a perennial high school football power, to the state tournament in Class 4A, in which they lost in the quarterfinals. He replaced former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brooks Bollinger, who left the Maplewood-based Catholic high school after a one season for a coaching job at the University of Pittsburgh.
The Hill-Murray football web page says, “The Hill-Murray Football program is about blocking, tackling, catching, running, and kicking, but it is also about ...”
- “Promoting: family values based on strong Christian values”
- “Dedicated to excellence for all involved—administrators, coaches, and players”
- “Who we are is more important than how good we are. … However, the most valuable entity that one can ever invest in is other people. … In Pioneer Football we talk not only about investing on the field but off of it, as well.”
The coaching job at Hill-Murray is Mauer’s first at the high school level, but Mauer, a cousin of Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer, has a long career in football, both as an athlete and coach.
The Minnesota Twins drafted him out of St. Paul’s Harding High School, but he opted instead for the University of Nebraska, where as quarterback he led the Cornhuskers to two Big Eight titles. After college he held coaching positions at Nebraska, North Dakota State, University of Wisconsin and New Mexico State.
Mauer returned to his hometown in 2004 to serve as head football coach at Concordia University. Then, in June 2011, he left. According to one news report: “Director of Athletics Tom Rubbelke has announced that he has accepted the resignation of head football coach Mark Mauer, effective immediately, as he pursues other professional opportunities.”
Mauer sold cars at the Mauer family auto dealership until landing the Hill Murray job in May 2012.
He also served on the St. Paul City Council in 1997, after the council voted 5-1 to choose him over five other candidates to fill the remaining year in the term of Councilman Dino Guerin, who was elected to the Ramsey County Board in 1996.
The Arrests
Mauer, 54, of Woodbury, was part of a busy day for the Fridley Police Department, which conducts one or two prostitution details each year, according to Lt. Mike Monsrud.
The 19 men arrested in Fridley on Tuesday ranged in age from 23 to 56 and came from as far away as Edina, Rogers and Stillwater. (The day before, police used a similar sting to arrested four women ranging in age from 18–32 for prostitution.)
Fridley police booked four rooms at the LivInn Hotel for the operation. In one room, a female police officer working undercover met the men who answered ads offering sex on Backpage.com and other websites.
Across the hall, police monitoring the first room by video, waiting for the exchange of money for sexual favors before moving in to make an arrest. In a third room, police processed the men after their arrest. (A fourth room served as a holding area where arrested men waited to be taken to the county jail in Anoka.)
Mauer has a court hearing in Anoka scheduled for March 20.

Bring Me the News has a post on this: Fridley police tell FOX9 that Mauer offered an undercover officer $100 for “full service” during the hotel sting. During processing at the Anoka County Jail, officers recovered $100 cash and some Viagra pills from Mauer.

Hill-Murray President Dr. Susan Paul released a statement to the Pioneer Press:
"I want to share with you some distressing news regarding our school and make you aware of an alleged incident involving Hill-Murray staff member and head football coach, Mark Mauer, that is being reported in the press," Paul's statement said. "I want to be clear that this incident is not related in any way to Hill-Murray, our students, or Mr. Mauer's work responsibilities. Nor will this incident affect the high quality education that our families expect at Hill-Murray School. We ask for your prayers for all members of the Hill-Murray School community."

This is just precious, especially in light of the fact that the only reason Ms. Paul is in her current position is because her predecessor was busy breaking the law. Let's not forget the basketball coach who was propositioning his own players. What the football coach has done seems pretty tame by comparison, but there is a clear pattern of behavior at this school and this is not even accounting for the catholic church's attitude towards molesting children. Blame the messenger, RBN, it's people like you who encourage this type of illicit behavior to continue by refusing to hold these people accountable.

RBN - This is a local paper and he was a local resident which makes the tie in. Is that the same with the others? If so, then they also should have been covered in this story but apparently there was no connection with Woodbury. As Randy Marsh stated above, there are problems at this institution. Additionally, Hill-Murry is nearby Woodbury and likely has a number of Woodbury residents as students which adds to the newsworthiness of the story.

A man hiring a prostitute. Wow crazy. I bet that doesn't happen at other schools. (ha!) Calling Hill Murray a bad institution because of faculty or staff who have broken laws is as absurd as calling Woodbury a bad city because of all of it's sex crimes (and there have been several ). And who is not holding the people accountable? As you have noted Randy, these people have been let go! Do you really believe that Tartan, Woodbury, Harding, Johnson, Stillwater faculty and staff don't break laws? Or we could talk about the stabbings and fights that occur at these schools....but even that doesn't make the papers. Get over your guilt and stop blaming the others for what you didn't do. This article should be about a man charged with prostitution and should have nothing to do with where he worked. It's too bad the news can never focus on any of the good works that come out of Hill Murray and instead has to stretch to tie any scandal they can to the school. If you think this has anything to do with this institution, I think you need a therapist to get over your guilt.

Joan, I'm sure Hill Murray does some great things. But, the facts have been presented. If individuals at WHS or any other Woodbury school have done the same I expect to be notified in the same manner. Hill needs to get a good PR person. As far as Mauer, making such reckless choices makes one wonder about his other choices. He's supposed to be a leader of impressionable children.

The fact that it's Hill-Murray really doesn't matter. If it was any high school, any coach, charged in a similar crime, it's a story.

Joan unfortunately an event like this should be in the news when it involves a person of authority with exposure to our young people whether it is a public school or private, This i s true even if it is an institution where parents must pay college like tuitions based on thei proposition that a catholic education somehow prepares them better--or protects them more-- from the realities of life. Hill Murray despite the many good teachers, administrators, parents and students is caught in the inevitable hypocracy of positioning itself on a higher moral level then public education. Three incidents now of alleged impropriety--sexual in nature--among coaches administrators and teachers open HM to this issue.

Bob, so do you think he resigned because he was innocent? I realize at Hill Murray this is a common occurrence based on recent history, but in normal society this is generally frowned upon. I happen to think setting up these stings is a waste of time and resources, but exactly which laws do you want to require be abided by and ignore?

This is the 4th incident in as many years. Dr. Susan Paul hired Mauer not only as the football coach but as Hill Murray's Major Gift Officer. This is the real problem. How much was he paid? Why won't the school ever tell parents what the salaries of these people are? I'd like to see a reporter ask how much Mauer was paid and them follow up with how much does the hockey coach get paid. Great hockey coach but he too is given a bogus title as AD. What qualified Mauer as a major gifts officer? Does he have a master's in public policy? Experience writing grants? Non-profit board experience? Nope. Had they done a background check they would have learned that someone with the same name and date of birth had a conviction in 2007. Hill Murray should have found out the real reason Mauer resigned from coaching at Concordia. To go sell cars? Seriously, who believes this?

Nice post, just kidding. If you know so much put it out, if not you need to shut your pie-hole. By the way, Hill Murray's a private school so they don't have to disclose that type of information. If you don't like the fact that this information isn't disclosed don't send your children.

Just the first time he was popped for it. Maybe some of the defenders would feel different if their daughter, sister, friends daughter, was the one he reached out to. Nothing like taking advantage of these girls eh? Yeah it was a cop...this time.Guys house is in forclosure, hits up hookers. What a gem, great example of character for young people. Guy made a living off the Mauer name, comes back to bite him in the ass.

Sure thing Bobby- here's the list of Hill-Murray's Finest
1.) February 2013 Mark Mauer (dob 9/2/58) arrested for solicitation. Mark Mauer
(dob 9/2/58) plead guilty to a Disorder Conduct charge.
2.) June 2007, Matthew Ricker who contracted with Hill-Murray to help coach boys'
basketball in the 2006-07 season. He admitted in the St. Paul courtroom that he sent sexually explicit cell phone text messages to three basketball players at Hill-Murray High School in Maplewood. Hill-Murray President Joseph Peschges said in June that a background check showed that Ricker had "a clean slate." (I call bullshit)
3.) July 2010. Peschges grabbed the undercover officer's crotch "over the clothing," says Crum. The 63-year-old Hill-Murray president was arrested at 2:20 p.m. on suspicion of fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct and booked in Ramsey County jail.
4.) In May 2004, Ramsey County Sheriff's deputies patrolled Keller Park in Maplewood, reports Review-News. At a part of the park known to be a hotspot for homosexual behavior -- called "Beer Can Hill" -- a deputy noticed a man creeping around behind a tree.
Peschges saw the deputies and took off running. They chased him through the park yelling at him to stop, but Peschges kept going.
And TT gone after 10+ years of teaching math. 15 Years of parents AND FACULTY complaining about him and 15 years of Dr. Paul sweeping it under the rug. There's not a female student without a horror story about him.

Exactly Yomammy! People want to somehow use this as reason to tarnish the school name. As if faculty hired to other schools don't have the same issues. I personally know they do. It's just not publicized at other schools. Those who want to somehow use this to put down Hill Murray, how about we look at the product of Hill Murray. The students. I don't recall anyone their punching their teachers, getting knifed on the school bus, forming circles around students fighting so the teachers couldn't break it up or KILLING THEIR GIRLFRIENDS! So if you want compare apples to apples here, lets be real! this man committed no crime at Hill Murray. This article really has nothing to do with Hill Murray. The fact remains that Hill Murray lets God into school which can not be a bad thing. Do you want to argue this point????

I think the underlying factor seems to be the hypocrisy at Hill Murray. I don't doubt incidents happen at other schools, but I don't think they are trying to label themselves as virtuous as Hill Murray. I personally want to be notified whether this happens at WHS, MSA, Hill Murray or any other Metro school. The fact is that this behavior happens to be illegal. Whether you want to argue on the legality of it, that's another point.
