Students got to stay home Monday, but others had to brave subzero temperatures in Woodbury.
The city announced that warming houses and outdoor rinks will be closed today due to the weather.
Frostbite could happen in less than 10 minutes. Please stay inside and stay warm!
The high Monday was expected to be six below, with wind chills reaching 26 to 36 below, according to the National Weather Service. The forecasted low for Monday night was 16 below zero.
There is a dangerous wind chill advisory for the north central U.S., according to the National Weather Service.
Frigid temperatures and gusty winds will allow wind chill values to range from -25 to -50 degrees through Monday morning across much of North Dakota and Minnesota as well as northeast South Dakota and north central Iowa. This will lead to dangerous outdoor conditions, including the threat for frostbite and possibly hypothermia or death.
The rest of the week’s weather doesn’t look much warmer.

hi Kris, it's certainly colder than it has been in these parts for awhile. But it's still kinda wimpy compared to what can happen in Mn. -52F in Delano on 21 Jan 1888; -46F at Ft Snelling onf the same date; -41F in downtown St Paul.

Whoa, that is chilly. I can't recall it being 20 below or colder in the past couple of decades. Is -52 the record?

true, at best I recall we haven't had any -20F's in this area since at least 2009. but as recently as Feb 1996 we had a -30F. that same month it hit -60F at one of the stations in the Arrowhead. Might have even been colder but there was power surge or something that muddled the readings taken from the electronic thermometer at that station. and yes, -52F is the record for any station in the Twin Cities area. but as indicated there have been much colder readings up north.

Kris, in my neighborhood we have had power out two nights in a row. I don't know why, do you? I hope this won't become a trend! I am lucky to have a gas fireplace that helps keeps the chill off somewhat. I am very thankful for the people who go out and fix those power problems withing a few hours in the middle of the night!. My opinion is that the weather looks a lot nicer from the inside, looking out. I haven't left my house since Saturday! It's one of the perks of being retired!
