Jersey Mike's Sub is set to open in April 2013 in Woodbury.

Comparing Jersey Mike’s Subs to places like Subway or Jimmy John’s is “like comparing Taco Bell to Chipotle.”

That’s according to Brian Risch, who plans to open a Jersey Mike’s Subs in Woodbury this April.

It will be located between Cold Stone Creamery and Noodles & Company at 7455 Currell Boulevard.

“We’re excited,” said Risch, who lives in Woodbury. “It’s like no other sandwich place.”

The subs, which come in hot or cold varieties at 7 ½ or 15 inches, have a “Jersey flair,” Risch said, and feature a more oil and vinegar flavor than mayonnaise. The meat is cut after the customer orders a sub.

“Everything is as fresh as fresh can be,” he said.

Jersey Mike’s also offers “subs in a tub,” with the ingredients in a salad rather than on bread, Risch said.

The store will seat 32-26 people and seven to 10 employees will be hired. It will also offer catering.

Risch said he started looking into opening a Jersey Mike’s franchise after seeing a note from a friend on Facebook. He spent several months researching the company, talking to other franchisees and, of course, trying out the sandwiches. “And the product sells itself.”

“I just fell in love with it,” Risch said.

He said Jersey Mike’s is dedicated to giving back to the community, and he plans to continue that tradition at the Woodbury location.

What’s his favorite sub?

“The cheese steaks are absolutely wonderful,” Risch said.

Oh yay! Something new! I wonder if they will deliver. Jimmy John's won't deliver to us on Woodlane Drive.

Sweet, this place is great, I've ate at the one in St. Anthony. Agree, great cheesesteak!

Oh goody! Another Sub shop. We have such a shortage of those in Woodbury. How original. Subs in a tub.(We've always been able to get Subway in a bowl). I am really impressed at the new sizes- 7 1/2 inches instead of 6 inches. And 15 instead of 12. More is better, of course. How creative. Jersey flair. You can't get oil and vinegar on subs in other shops in Wooodbury? Maybe I will finally get around to trying some of the other sub shops in town before this new one opens. Sorry, I am underwhelmed.

I'm actually kind of excited for this place, but I do dig Jimmy John's, Divanni's... pretty much sandwiches in general.

I hope they decide to have a booth at the Taste of Woodbury! We have always thought subs would be a good thing to have at the event.

Seriously Susan? Have you ever had a REAL sub made with fresh sliced meat or a cheesesteak cooked on a flat top (not microwaved like Subway)? East Coast subs are awesome, I find it hard to believe that so many Minnesotans don't know what real food tastes like.

Ce, do I detect a bit of Easter snobbishness in your comment? Minnesotans DO recognize real food when they get it. I should clarify- I do not like Subway. The best sandwich I ever had was a muffuletta in New Orleans. If Jersey Mike's has a sandwich like that, I am willing to give it a try.
Kris, I will give Jimmy John's and Divanni's a try as well. I guess I need to get out more!

Psyched beyond belief! Greatest sandwiches I've ever had. Just curious how anyone can have an opinion about something they've never tried?

Does anyone remember the old Clark's submarine sandwich shops? They had tasty subs. This place looks like the same type of sandwiches. I will frequent.

Dan, yes I remember Clark's. I was a young kid though but still remember the wonderful smell when my mom would take me there. I think she would take us to the one off Minnehaha..

Have to agree. Minnesotans generally like bland food, they avoid seafood, and drinks lots of diet coke, house wine and house whiskey. Really, til I moved here I didn't know people drank any rail liquors but we hardly sell calls at the establishment I currently work at in town. There is a big taste difference between a $30 bottle of makers mark and $7 Wakefield family generic whiskey.

I agree that Woodbury has a few to many chain type eating locations! In my opinion this does NOT mean Jersey Mike's shouldn't come to town, it means the others should leave. I hope the subs are as great as they sound...and that they deliver...deliver beyond Woodlane! I'm guessing though with the freshness of their subs, delivery will not be an option????!!!!????

I liked them on Facebook, and the subs do look good. I asked about delivery a bit back, but I think it hadn't been decided.

Yeah Tim, I'm pumped about this. I talked to the owner recently, and they'll be opening relatively soon. I'll be doing a follow up. Never heard of Port O Sub. What's the scoop with them?
