Folks looking to cross Lake Road in Woodbury will find things a little easier these days.

A pedestrian signal at Lake Road and Wyndham Way became operational Tuesday.

It requires pedestrians to push a button, which activates flashing lights that alert motorists about people trying to cross the street.

The installation of the signal comes against the backdrop of news reports about 2012 being a deadly year for pedestrians.

Twenty-three pedestrians have been killed in Minnesota so far this year, the most in the past five, according to a Star Tribune report. There were 14 killed last year.

There are two parks near the intersection, and joggers and cyclists were out on Lake Road on Wednesday morning.

Awesome! This was BEYOND needed. Riding bikes across there with our 3 young boys was always a little bit like real-life Frogger. So glad they put this in! I actually used to stop my bike in the middle of the street sometimes and wave at cars because they were just flying toward us and one of my kids would of course miss his pedal or stall in the middle of Lake.

Thanks for doing this City Officials!

It's kind of tough there too because Lake Road bends south a bit (to the west).

Wonderful! I'm tempted to go there and cross 3-4x/day just to slow drivers down. FYI peeps, It is 35 mph at that crosswalk. Thank you City of Woodbury!

Good to hear Kim! I think it's tough in general because Woodbury isn't much of a "walking city" and cars aren't used to stopping. Hopefully this will help.

Anybody else used it yet, by the way?

I wish we could get one of these on Lake near Wedgewood Drive where there is a cross-walk and path to Edgewater Park. With the roundabouts going in on Woodbury Drive this will be the safest place for kids and parents with strollers to cross. As it is now people come down the hill going east and speed up treating it like a speedway. Especially when both high schools get out.
