A multi-functional plaza is in the works for the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project.

“It’s really the front door,” said John Slack, landscape architect with Stantec Consulting, who showed the Woodbury City Council drawings of the latest plans during a workshop Wednesday.

The area would include trees, seating areas, bike racks and outlets for vendors during events.

The plaza was one of several exterior aspects of the project discussed Wednesday. The city plans to raze the Bielenberg Sports Center’s dome this April and begin construction on a new $21.8 million field house and two-story lobby linking the facility with the existing arenas.

Council members seemed generally to favor the plans for the plaza, though Councilman Paul Rebholz did question the placement of bike racks. He said there will likely be a need for more racks, firstly, and noted that it could create a haphazard look at the entrance.

Staff and the consultant said they would look into other options.
