Plans for a new Woodbury-based Christian radio station initially called for a 1,200-watt signal.

Jill Martin Rische, vice president of the Religious Information Network, says the new antenna will pump out a 5,500-watt signal.

“It raises the number of people we can reach to a whole new level,” she said.

The new antenna is in the process of being built, and the new station will be on the air within the next six months. (It has to be up and running by April 19, 2013, or its Federal Communications Commission permit will expire.)

The FCC recently approved the antenna site. “We’re good to go,” Martin Rische said.

The nonprofit WAJC FM 88.1 is now looking for someone to donate about 1,000 square feet of studio space in Woodbury, Martin Rische said.

WAJC will be a “community station” and looks to appeal to listeners of all ages—as opposed to most stations that focus on a specific demographic, she said.

“We feel like radio is for everyone,” Martin Rische said. “We’re retro radio—where it included everybody.”

Programming will be a mix of music, shows from area residents and Christian programs.

“The goal is to build a station so deeply rooted in the community that the talent and the listeners and everyone in the community is a big part of it,” Martin Rische said.
