Updated: What Should Go Here? Sportsman’s Warehouse

The building has been vacant for some time. What do you think would rejuvenate the space?

What do you think should go in at the former Sportsman's Warehouse building in Woodbury?

The outline from the sign is still there, but it’s been some time since fishing poles, ammo and tents were sold at the Sportsman’s Warehouse in Woodbury.

The Utah-based company closed the Woodbury location in 2009, along with two other stores in Minnesota.

So, what do you think should go there? Another outdoor-goods store? What about breaking up the space? What does that commercial area of Woodbury need?

Let us know what you think in the comments section below. (And if you have a suggestion for our next installment of What Should Go Here? email kris.janisch@patch.com.)

Calls and emails to the Minneapolis location of Cassidy Turley, a commercial real estate firm whose name and number is on the building, were not returned.

Here are some ideas from people on the Woodbury Patch Facebook page:

Sarah: Dave and Busters would be awesome!

Erik: Whole Foods or if it was big enough I would say Macys.

Emeigh: Dave and Busters!

Laurie: Whole Foods.

Tammy: Dave and Busters for sure!!!!

Matthew: Smoke shop...

Tracy: Tj Maxx

Colinda: Dave and busters

June: Whole Foods!!

Eric: Ray's MTB Indoor Park. (I have this odd feeling that I may be the only one on this one. Raysmtb.com)

Tracy: MACY'S

Jen: For sure not another Goodwill, Big Lots, or Savers. I'm surprised Becker didn't take the space. Are they building?!? WHOLE FOODS would be nice. Too bad they didn't want the new development that Rainbow snatched up. NORDSTROM RACK.

Rich: A Staples??

This town desperately needs a Dave & Busters.

Dave and Busters is a great idea. I was at Pinstripes in Edina (or something) recently and that would be cool too.

Granite City & Brewery or a Cinema Cafe (watch a movie and have dinner at the same time)

Demori's in Oakdale is for sale. That would be great for Cinema Cafe (only 1 screen tho)

Never been to a Cinema Cafe Jacie, but it sounds cool. And as much as I like the old-school nature of the Woodbury 10, it could use some updates. And Dave, that suggestion was a hit on our Facebook page. Others said Whole Foods.

Woodbury had a Cinema Cafe about 14-15 years ago (where Warners Stellian is now). It would be great to have that back!

Regarding Whole Foods....don't we think Woodbury has enough grocery stores now?! Kowalski's, Trader Joe's, Cub, Rainbow, Target Superstore, Wal-Mart.....did I miss any??

Agree! No more grocery stores...add Aldi to the above list soon!

The thing that still disappoints me is that the city council nixed having a Costco at the State Farm site "because we already had a Sam's Club." This is why we can't have nice things.

Here's the story I ran when the State Farm deal was killed: http://patch.com/A-gKNL

Container Store or antique flea market or indoor gun range.

On second thought...maybe not a gun range, but something recreational for the family. Bowling?

Marc -- I don't recall the City saying that Costco wasn't going in "because we already had a Sam's Club." However, I think the State Farm site is a lot more complicated than we citizens realize. It's not as simple as putting in one or two stores. There are all kinds of zoning issues as well as the City's desire to do something all-encompassing, rather than piece-meal. Sadly, it still sits empty. There have been numerous attempts to do something wonderful with that space, unfortunately nothing has come through yet.

You're right. I'm oversimplifying a complex issue. The zoning issues are particularly tricky. I do remember it being mentioned that we already had a Sam's Club as part of the discussion, though. Whether or not that was the defining reason for why the deal fell apart (it probably was not), it was still disappointing to me, because Sam's Club and Costco do not necessarily have the same audience.

A bowling alley isn't a bad idea. But there is that Pinz place in Oakdale that's relatively close.

How about a Pawn America.... just kidding. Would it be too small for a Dave and Busters? There is a lot of empty retail space out there.

Shield's Sporting Goods, perhaps Herbergers or Macy's. Not necessarily at this site but something like Granite City & Brewery or Cooper's Hawk Winery and Restaurant would be nice to add to restaurant choices in Woodbury.

What is it about Granite City? People are always suggesting they come to town. I've seen it on our Facebook page a ton GK.

Granite City with the micro-brew and restaurant ambiance would add to the selection in Woodbury. They have good food, mug club, Saturday and Sunday brunch. Cooper's Hawk Winery & Restaurant is similar but with a wine theme rather than micro-brew theme, a store as you come in like Machine Shed with wine tasting.

Somebody asked in this post today about the 10-year anniversary of Sam's Club—and how affected retail development in the area—why SuperTarget never targeted this location. http://patch.com/A-wB7D

How about a couple of new restaurants:
Long John Silvers
Golden Coral

We need more variety.

Somebody emailed me today asking about these features. Probably time to fire up a new one. The emailer said she would like to see a Cost Plus World Market in Woodbury.

Woodbury desperately needs a "Drafthouse Cinema". Much like the Alamo Drafthouse franchise. I would be willing to invest....

That could be cool Bode. I think someone suggested something along those lines for the Woody's spot. And for others who weren't in the know (like me) I had to google Drafthouse Cinema: www.drafthouse.com/
