Plans for a new gymnasium/classroom facility at Woodbury’s Math and Science Academy took another step forward on Wednesday.

The Woodbury City Council approved several measures for the 31,000-square-foot building set to be built north of school, which opened in 1999.

The architecture will be identical to the existing school building, Community Development Director Dwight Picha said.

The school's enrollment is expected to swell to about 500 by the 2016-17 school year, Picha said. MSA, a 6-12 school, has about 425 students now.

“It’s been a very successful school,” he said.

There were some concerns about parking brought up at Planning Commission meetings, but those have since been resolved.

The council also approved issuing $11.5 million in bonds for the school. The city will undertake no moral or general obligation by issuing the bonds.
