Woodbury Liquors Closes

The liquor store closed July 1, according to a sign on its door.

Woodbury Liquors is closed.

A sign on the door says it closed on July 1.

The liquor store had been operating in Woodbury for the past 40 years, said Bill Traiser, who owns the building.

The previous owner had owned Woodbury Liquors for 20 years, Traiser said.

After hearing rumors that it was going to close, Patch stopped in at the liquor store a few months ago and the owner said he was planning to move to Illinois to be with family.

Traiser said the man had grown tired of running the business.

There have been talks with a few groups, but there is no new tenant imminent at the space, Traiser said.

Woodbury Liquors was located at 1546 Woodlane Drive.

40 years is a long time. Any other Woodbury businesses you can think of that have been around that long?

I wonder if there's more to the owner's decision to close the business than "he grew tired of running it." I mean, it seems if that were the true reason he wouldn't bother moving it to Illinois. Perhaps the city's decision to allow larger competitors to move in next door (MGM) and across the street (Rainbow Fresh) had anything to do with the store's closing after so many years of success.

My Family owned Woodbury Liquor prior to this owner for 13 years. It was so hard! We had MGM movie in next door which hurt business, and at the time we sold, there was a liquor store next to Rainbow as well (now gone). Woodbury just plain doesn't need that many liquor stores in that small of an area, especially when they are all chains, one small family owned business, cannot compete with a chain store. They pushed the small business owner right out of the way, and that is very sad. The reality is, this space is now rented out to a different venue, and there will never be a Woodbury Liquors again :(
