Woodbury Officials to Work with Red Roof Inn Management

The city and Red Roof Inn management released a joint statement Wednesday.

In the wake of community concern over criminal activity at the Red Roof Inn, the city and motel management on Wednesday sent out a joint statement.

Management of the maligned Woodbury motel—which has been in the spotlight since the August hostage standoff that left one man dead after being shot by police—say they will work to enhance security procedures.

Meanwhile, the Woodbury Public Safety Department plans to introduce a new “guest services staff training program for hotel front desk personnel in Woodbury,” and the Red Roof Inn will be the first to participate.

Below is the statement in full.

The City of Woodbury and Red Roof Inn management met last week in follow up to a recent event at the property.

The meeting was highly cooperative and productive, and all shared a common goal: to ensure the safety and security of guests, employees and the general public at the Red Roof Inn.

The Red Roof will take specific actions to modify security at the property. Red Roof will enhance its check-in procedures, and all guests will be instructed of the hotel’s zero tolerance policy for illegal and inappropriate behavior.

Additionally, the Woodbury Public Safety Department proposed to develop a guest services staff training program for hotel front desk personnel in Woodbury.  Red Roof Inn agreed to be the first hotel to participate.

Red Roof will continue its long-standing cooperative relationship with local authorities and police. The City of Woodbury and Red Roof Inn have committed to an open and ongoing dialogue to ensure shared interests are met.

There has been a vocal segment of Woodbury asking for the city to take action against the motel, including Woodbury Patch blogger Melanie Snyder’s petition.

I'm sure the drug dealers and prostitues will run out the door when "instructed of the hotel’s zero tolerance policy for illegal and inappropriate behavior."

Exactly. Problem solved. No criminal wants to violate a "policy" so that will take care of things.

Charge for each police call. And charge high.

This is an excellent idea. Doesn't the fire department already do this? Why not the police? Maybe you get one or two calls a year, but if The Red Roof Inn had to pay for all of these police visits, they might take a more serious approach to the situation and security.

I'm pretty sure all hotels already have a zero tollerance policy in place for illegal behavior. What other policy can a hotel have, a three strikes and your out policy regarding illegal activity?

Based on the above article, this all sounds like a 'band-aid fix' to the problem. No way is this going to work. I am curious as to why the City of Woodbury is so dedicated to the Red Roof Inn? Looks like they are being pretty passive in this situation. The reality is, it is time to close it down. The demographic that the Red Roof Inn attracts and markets, isn't working for Woodbury or the surrounding communities. Enough is enough. Close it down.

Maybe requiring a credit card would be a good step forward to weed out a few of the "top notch" guests.

That should be the very first step, and should be done immediately.

That was something Melanie brought up too, Bill. Here's the story I had with her: http://patch.com/A-x9xX

They started requiring a credit card a few days ago.
