Woodbury Relay for Life Just Shy of Fundraising Goal
People can still contribute toward this year’s American Cancer Society fundraiser through Aug. 31.
While South Washington County Relay for Life organizers expect to be short of their own fundraising goal, they will likely hit the $270,000 mark the American Cancer Society set for the event.
Mara Mayberry, co-chair of this year’s Relay for Life, said $238,500 had been raised as of Saturday morning. That was behind last year’s total at that point ($235,000), but she still anticipates $270,000 will be raised.
People can donate through the event website until Aug. 31, and Mayberry said she expects a few big checks to come in from sponsors.
Planners for the local event wanted to raise $300,000 as a stretch goal, Mayberry said.
“I wanted a ‘3’ in front of that number,” she said.

The number of teams was down this year, Mayberry said, and the economy may have also played a role.
“It’s catching up with the nonprofits,” she said.
Still, she said the total so far “is a great number,” and one youth team, Freshman for the Fight, raised $8,600.
“They did a phenomenal job,” Mayberry said.

She also called the dunk tank for the Mayors Challenge “a huge success,” and added that Woodbury Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens won. The health fair—a first this year—was also well attended, she said.
Overall, the event was “as smooth as can be,” but organizers could always use more volunteers.

That is too bad they missed their goal. Such a great event and they put forward so much effort.

The books don't close until August 31, so we have time to make up the difference! If you didn't have a chance to donate, it's not too late!!
