Woodbury to Celebrate New Miracle Field June 7

The field, made specifically for children with disabilities, is nearly complete at the Bielenberg Sports Center.

Children with disabilities will soon have a new field in Woodbury to call their own.

The is nearing completion, and the city announced Monday that a grand opening ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 7. The field is located at the .

The baseball diamond was designed with special turf for children with mental or physical handicaps. It features cushioned, synthetic turf that accommodates wheelchairs and other assistive devices.

The Woodbury Rotary Club, along with Miracle League of Minnesota and Minnesota Network of Woodbury, coordinated the majority of the fundraising efforts through numerous events and private donations. The total construction cost more than $250,000. The city provided the site.

“I think it looks great,” said Bill Reinhardt with the Woodbury Rotary Club.

He also said a local news station plans to broadcast from the June 7 event.

Bob Klatt, Woodbury Parks and Recreation director, said the field itself is complete and there is only some landscaping left to wrap up. Games are expected to begin a short time after the grand opening, he said.

Members of the Woodbury Rotary Club, the Miracle League of Minnesota, Minnesota Utility Contractors Association, Minnesota Network of Woodbury and city officials will be on hand for the June 7 event. University of Minnesota mascot Goldy Gopher, Minnesota Twins mascot T.C. Bear and other members of the Twins organization will join kids from the East Metro Miracle League, currently playing at BSC, to help celebrate.

Last summer, children ages 3-17 began playing the first series of East Metro Miracle League games on one of the existing ball fields at BSC. According to Woodbury recreation specialist Michelle Okada, who coordinates the league, many of the participants had been traveling long distances to play at Miracle Fields in other parts of the metro area.

“They are thrilled to finally have a league and a field that serves east metro families,” she said in a release from the city.

Bielenberg Sports Center is located at 4125 Radio Drive, just south of Bailey Road in Woodbury. The Miracle Field site can be accessed via Hargis Parkway off Radio Drive, near .
