Part of a roof at the expansion site for Liberty Ridge Elementary fell in on two construction workers Monday, sending one man to the hospital.

One man was transported to Regions Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to Woodbury Fire Cmdr. John Wallgren.

The worker was semi-conscious and bleeding from his nose, he said.

Trusses tipped over and fell, trapping the two workers beneath the debris, Wallgren said. "It was not a collapse."

The other worker, who was in a caged lift at the time of the incident, was uninjured, Wallgren said.

Authorities were called at 3:21 p.m., Woodbury police said, and by the time crews arrived the man had already been pulled from beneath the trusses.

Construction workers were installing the trusses when one heaved and caused a portion of adjacent lumber to collapse, Mike Vogel, assistant to the superintendent for operations for South Washington County Schools, said in a Pioneer Press report. The contractor on the project is Kue Contractors, but a subcontractor was installing the trusses, the report says.

Vogel told the Woodbury Bulletin that the accident would be investigated.

Amy Wiechman, owner of the nearby Stepping Stones Early Learning Center building, saw the incident, according to the Woodbury Bulletin story.

“Once one came down, they all went,” she told the newspaper. “I think it pulled the back wall down too.”

District 833 is building a $4.5 million addition across the street from the elementary school in Woodbury.

Wallgren said he asked crews to ensure the scene was safe before they left for the day.
