That Sports Game that Has All the Cool Ads

I was just invited to my second-ever Super Bowl party. I’m really excited to go!

Good friends, good food, and expensive commercials that make us all believe that we are advertising critics. And that super adorable Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet. Oh yeah, and football too. Go Team! <Insert team that is favored to win here>.

I have to admit, I have never gotten into watching football. Until I sat down to write this post, I didn’t know who was playing this year (thanks to Husband for telling me). Although, thanks to my Facebook news feed over the last couple months, I did know that it wasn’t the Vikings or Packers, which I was able to figure out amidst the sea of anger and profanity from my Facebook friends.

But the Super Bowl is not about the football anymore. It’s about the celebration. The social festivities. Yelling stuff at the TV. The ample amounts of fried foods covered in sauce, cheese, meat, and powdered sugar. The Halftime show (regardless of whether it is performed by Fergie or Janet Jackson or, I don’t know, Bette Midler, or whoever the heck is performing in a given year). And, of course, those commercials.

Adweek has taken a poll recently, and determined that more people watch the Super Bowl for the ads than for the game. Yes, many of the commercials are really stupid, some make absolutely no sense, some are *gasp* scandalous, and some are so memorable that they will be talked about for years to come.

Remember those Budweiser frogs from the 90s? And the Star Wars kid from 2011?  Or the infamous “1984” ad for Apple that is still talked about today? I was just a wee baby at that time, and I’ve probably seen that commercial 25 times, even though it was only aired on television once.

My point? Yes, I am excited go to a Super Bowl party and “watch” the football game (to me, this will include playing with my friends’ one-year-old boy and fighting with their dog), I will eat lots of food, and I will eagerly watch commercials that I would otherwise fast-forward on my DVR. And it will be awesome.

What is your favorite part of the Super Bowl? What commercials are most memorable to you from years past?
