Looking back at this week’s top stories from Woodbury—here’s a rundown of what you might have missed. Monday Here’s a really nice story about a Woodbury mom who is trying to arrange a meeting between pop star Justin Bieber and her daughter Emme, who has an incurable heart defect. One of the best things about working for Patch, as opposed to my old newspaper, is that I can get instant feedback on how people are using the site. Yes, we like "use" rather than "read." Remember, this is your site, I just work here. I'll get to the point. I recently checked out the most popular search terms for Woodbury Patch. Coming in at No. 2 was Carver Lake Bike Trail. Naturally I plugged this into the site. And what I came back with wasn't overly helpful. (All apologies to Eric Berg, one of my favorites.) So I mentioned this in passing to Elizabeth Owens, recreation technician with …
I had the privilege Tuesday night of playing for the Woodbury Public Safety Department in a basketball game against Woodbury High School staffers. The event—a fundraiser for the high school’s choir program—was a blast. We had coach Scott Swansson throwing behind-the-back passes, special guest free-throw shooter Principal Linda Plante, Public Safety Chief Lee Vague working the low block, and a couple of missed threes from yours truly. It was a lighthearted, fun game, which ended in a tie and every player from both teams clearing the bench for the final seconds. The event has been going on for …
Even through the magic of video, it's hard to capture the excitement the Woodbury boys basketball game generated Wednesday at the Target Center. It was impressive to see the local squad give Hopkins—always a threat to win the title—all it could handle before losing in overtime. If you have photos of the game or thoughts on how it went or wishes you'd like to send the boys, leave them in the comments section below. Congratulations gentlemen on a fine season. Woodbury High School Principal Linda Plante on Thursday sent out a note about the team. "Congratulations to the Woodbury High School Boys…
Last week, someone asked on the Woodbury Patch Facebook page what was happening at the pond at Radio Drive and Seasons Parkway. Desiree Siggens said she was curious, but added: "It has been driving my kids crazy!" We put the word out to the city's communications guy, Jason Egerstrom, who is always helpful. Here's what he said is going on at the pond, which is currently dry and has plenty of exposed rocks. The city’s contractor is conducting routine storm water pond maintenance at the pond located east of Radio Drive and south of Seasons Parkway. They are removing sediment from the bottom of …
For those of you who keep up with Woodbury Patch on Facebook, you’ve probably gathered that I’m a bit of a sports fan. Like millions of other Americans, I’ll be watching the Super Bowl with friends tonight. (And eating plenty of food.) Odds-makers have the Patriots as a three-point favorite, but which team do you think will win? Give your answer in our poll here, and leave a comment about why at the bottom of this story. I think it’ll be the Pats, but really I just want to see a good game. Facts About the Super Bowl This year, a 30-second commercial costs $3.5 million, up $400,000 from last …
I’m often asked: How do you figure out what to write about? How do you get the news? Some of it is just the rhythm of the week: you know the city council meets most Wednesdays, you call the fire department or Woodbury lawmakers to see what’s new, and I know I’ll put the police blotter out on Saturday morning. A lot of news gathering, however, is just a matter of talking to folks and keeping an eye out for anything new or noteworthy or unusual. And it’s that last part that people seem to enjoy so much about Saturday’s police blotter. Last Saturday I got an email from Jenny Jennings, who lives …
One of the best parts of my job is getting out in the community and meeting people. I was grateful for the chance over the weekend to participate in a Washington County Library Read-a-Thon. And while I viewed this as a good chance to meet some of Woodbury's younger residents, when I started reading on Saturday, there wasn't anyone there. R.H. Stafford Library Manager Chad Lubbers said it didn't matter. It's like keeping a vigil, he told me, just keep on reading. So I jumped into Green Eggs and Ham. It was a little odd reading to no one, but by the time I got into The Very Hungry Caterpillar …
In a blog post by Brittney Harvin, Patch user Robert Bass asked: Anyone feeling festive and want to post neighborhoods or houses that have a great display of Christmas lights? My three year old loves looking at the lights and it might be fun to fill up a cup of hot chocolate and take a drive around to see the lights. Well, I'll start with this one from Woodbury's Roger and Linda Dawson. (Yes, I know it's kind of cheating.) Still, if you know a a great block or house, let us know about it in the comments section. Please only include the block and street, not the actual address. If you have a …
Start digging through your basement for those lights and decorations, because your holiday display could secure $100,000 for local schools. Patch is ready to launch its "Deck The House" contest, a nationwide search for the most dazzling displays of the season. Between Dec. 8 and Dec. 26, users of Woodbury Patch are encouraged to post photos and videos of their “decked out” houses to our site as part of a national contest that could net your local school district $100,000. There will be more than 800 local winners from local Patch sites, who will represent their Patch communities in the …
Today marks the one-year anniversary of Woodbury Patch. It’s been fun, to say the least. In one short year we’ve gained a foothold in Woodbury, bringing you daily news and giving you a chance to interact with your neighbors and share information that’s important to you. Everyone in the city has been very supportive of what we’re trying to do here: become the hub for news and information about Woodbury. As Thanksgiving approaches, we would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to all of you—the Patch community—for your support. If you see me around town, stop and say hello. I love …
Last winter, Patch brought you the story of Elisha and Justin Robson, a young couple that was filmed for an upcoming episode of the popular HGTV show House Hunters. The episode is set to air at 9 p.m. on Nov. 8. (*) Producers for the show contacted Woodbury natives Sara Yocum and Jodi Klepac, twins who work out of the Edina Realty office on Commons Drive in Woodbury. Klepac (nee Joynson) had previously appeared on House Hunters when she was living in Chicago a few years back. For those unfamiliar with the program, HGTV follows real estate agents and their clients through home-buying process. …
The Woodbury City Council last week approved 24-7 work hours for a sewer project, learned about a recent spike in chemicals in city water, approved the preliminary plat for the next additions to the Stonemill Farms development and heard from County Attorney Pete Orput Dozens of area residents also packed the council chambers as Woodbury honored the winners of this year’s photo contest. PFC Issues Public Works Director David Jessup said the jump in levels of chemicals in two wells at a former 3M dump site in Woodbury does not appear to indicate that the perfluorochemicals, or PFCs, have …
Woodbury Days is kind of a big deal. Here at Patch, we tried to cover as much as possible—and we realize that you were probably out enjoying the food and rides and fun… and not surfing the web. So, here’s a rundown of all the coverage on Patch this year. Photos Photos: Shooting For Fun At Woodbury Days Pics from Friday afernoon—and nearly every booth at the business fair. Rockin' At Woodbury Days Photos from Friday evening events and activities, including the band 8 foot 4 and the crowd checking them out. Saturday Scenes At Woodbury Days Lots of people out enjoying the daytime events. Kicking…
When Patch did a preview story for Woodbury Days 2011 last week, we were a little hazy about the annual festival’s origins. So we put the word out to city staff and local historians, and received a few interesting responses, including some old newsletters from Emergency Services Commander Mike Richardson. The July 10, 1967, edition of The Woodbury Spark—a publication of the Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department—reported that the Women’s Auxiliary would soon meet to wrap up its plans for the inaugural Woodbury Days. Another old Woodbury newsletter—the Aug. 1, 1967, edition of Woodbury News Chips…
Local American Legion and VFW representatives, along with members of the Veterans Memorial Committee, recently accepted a $5,000 check from the platinum and gold sponsors of the upcoming golf tournament, which will be held in honor of late Woodbury resident Dick Stafford. Stafford—an integral member of the Washington County community as a former commissioner for 12 years and a county auditor and treasurer for decades—died Feb. 24 at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul during heart surgery. He was 81. Bruce Nettleton, vice chair of the Woodbury Veterans Memorial Council, said the tournament will…
