First: Happy Fourth of July, or Independence Day—the national holiday in which we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence which more or less officially created our great country. While most Americans will be celebrating this historic anniversary by feasting and sharing time with family and friends, Patch also thinks it's important for the patriots, the flag-wavers, and the pyromaniacs out there to expand their knowledge of this American holiday with a few little-known facts. Note: Some information provided by www.usa.gov, and www.pueblo.gsa.gov. 1. July 4 is not technically …
While a state government shutdown wouldn't affect Woodbury city government, we know that it will have an impact on area residents. If you work for a state agency and have been given a layoff notice, work at a state park that will see reductions, or are otherwise impacted by the shutdown through fewer state services, let Patch know. Please email kris.janisch@patch.com or call 651-269-2432.
As you might expect from a community news outlet, Woodbury Patch had tons of graduation coverage. From photo galleries of commencement to senior awards and volunteer efforts, Patch has tried to highlight graduation and recognize the achievements of local seniors. Here we go! (Click the links to see the stories.) U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar was on hand as East Ridge High School honored its first graduating class. Here’s a great photo gallery from the event. At Woodbury High School, volunteering is part of the curriculum. The school for the past several years has asked students to give back as the …
Spotted a rainbow over Woodbury on Wednesday and put a quick post on Twitter. Soon after IttyBittyWitty1 gave me a "boo" because I didn't post a photo with it. Well, here are a couple I grabbed. One near Lakes Tavern and Grill, the other while I was at a stoplight along Radio Drive. If you have a photo of yesterday's rainbow, click the "Add your own photos" button below the photo or email it to kris.janisch@patch.com.
Coyotes have been spotted in Woodbury. Woodbury police often receive calls about the animals in the city. For the most part, they haven't become threatening. Apparently, that's also the case with a couple of coyote decoys at City Hall. The city has put up the fake coyotes for the past three years or so in an effort to spook geese in the area. But city officials say they haven't been as effective this year. One employee said she saw a goose waddle right past the "coyotes" recently. A few weeks ago, a Woodbury resident called police to report coyotes near City Hall, only to be told that they …
Fear. We do not face it alone. Keith Johnson, the featured speaker at this year’s Woodbury Prayer Breakfast, gave a stirring, funny and poignant speech for the hundreds who attended Tuesday’s event at the Prom Center in Oakdale. Johnson, a former chaplain with the Minnesota Vikings, addressed this year’s theme, “Tackling Fear With Faith,” through the story of David and Goliath. Just as David faced his Goliath, so too must people in Woodbury stand up to the fears that can grip our lives, said Johnson, often peppering his speech with interesting nuggets from his travels to the Holy Land. It was…
Apparently, for the past few years it has rained during Woodbury's annual Arbor Day Spring Tree Planting Program. That was the case Saturday, as I joined about 20 other people at the site I was assigned for tree planting. Most of the other people there were from local Girl Scout and Boy Scout groups. Part of Patch's involvement in the community includes regular volunteering. I was assured by City Administrator Clint Gridley that the holes would be dug already. Sounded easy enough. (He didn't mention the rain and 30-degree weather.) It was definitely cold and wet, and the folks from the city …
