Four members of the Washington County Board of Commissioners were sworn in to office Tuesday after being elected or re-elected in November 2012. Commissioners Gary Kriesel (District 3) and Lisa Weik (District 5) were both re-elected to the board. Weik was selected to serve as board chair in 2013. Commissioner Autumn Lehrke (District 4) will serve as Vice Chair for 2013. A convicted felon from Woodbury was sentenced to three years of probation after authorities discovered he voted in the 2010 election. Steven Larry Richie, 58, admitted that he voted at St. John Lutheran Church in the Nov. 2, 2010, election, according to the criminal complaint. In a July 2011 interview with police, Richie acknowledged he was on probation, but he “did not consider himself to be a convicted felon,” the complaint says. Court records show that he was convicted of burglary in 2007 and sentenced to five years of probation in early 2008. Investigators found that he completed a voter-registration card but also registered the same day at the church, according to the complaint. The Washington County Elections Division requested the …

As we move on from election season to the holiday season, I would like to thank Ann Marie Metzger for her willingness to run for office in Woodbury District 53B. I know it is not easy, but challengers keep the process competitive, and that is a good thing. As our former Mayor Hargis used to say, “iron sharpens iron, and that’s when the sparks fly.” Related: Woodbury Election Results Every election cycle is important, but I was particularly anxious to see the results of the ballot questions so I could get a better pulse of our district moving forward. In summary, the senate district was similar with 43.07 percent (53A) and 43.20 percent (53B)—most of you do not think we should amend the constitution to define the word “marriage.” …

Voters in the mostly suburban cities Patch covers were more opposed to the proposed gay-marriage ban than Minnesota voters generally.
Here's how residents in a selection of Minnesota cities voted on the ballot measure that would have added a definition of marriage as only between one man and one woman to the state Constitution. Statewide, the ballot measure failed to exceed the 50 percent level of support it needed in the Nov. 6, 2012 general election. It got 47.53 percent, according to unofficial results from all but two of Minnesota's 4,102 precincts' results. Taken together, people in cities served by Patch—mostly in the Twin Cities suburbs—rejected the marriage amendment in greater proportion (61.21 percent) than Minnesotans taken as a whole (52.47 percent). After 13 years, there will be a new county commissioner representing District 2 of Washington County. Longtime Washington County Commissioner Bill Pulkrabek was defeated by challenger Ted Bearth—the results came in early Wednesday morning, with Bearth taking 52 percent of the vote to 47 percent for Pulkrabek. Pulkrabek, 42, has served as a county commissioner since 1999. Before that he was the mayor of Oakdale from 1995 to 1998, a title he received in his mid-20s. Bearth said he has been encouraged to run for the Washington County Board since he first retired from the city council in 2004, but he often dismissed the idea and opted for retirement instead.
