Woodbury Council Mulls Alcohol for Bielenberg Sports Center Restaurant

The City Council recently examined plans for a new restaurant at the sports center, which is currently undergoing a major expansion.

Want to sit down at the Bielenberg Sports Center and have a bloody Mary on a weekend morning? The Woodbury City Council examined Wednesday plans for a new restaurant as part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project, and alcohol sales were big part of the discussion. Greg Gartner, whose company is heading up food service at the new facility, said he plans to apply for a full liquor license. Related: New Restaurant at Bielenberg: Woodbury Council Gets First Look Councilwoman Julie Ohs expressed concerns about having alcohol sales at a facility where children are the primary patrons. “It gets a little tricky,” she said. Gartner said there would be some sort of divider, possibly a railing, keeping the restaurant area separate from …

Snapshot: Woodbury Council Tours Heritage House

The structure, at Marsh Creek Park, is open for tours during the summer.

The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday took a tour of the Woodbury Heritage Society’s Heritage House. The structure, which was once attached to the log cabin home of original property owner Frederick Raths, was built circa 1870. For those who want to tour the house themselves, the Woodbury Heritage Society offers free tours the second and fourth Sundays of the month from June through September. The tours run from 1-4 p.m., and a member of the organization is on hand to answer questions and talk about the house and grounds. The Heritage House is located at Marsh Creek Park. From the Woodbury Heritage Society’s website: Raths emigrated from Germany in 1853 and purchased the Woodbury property in 1866. This addition was used by the Raths …

Woodbury Council Makes Informal Decision on Splash Pad

The water feature has been considered as part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion plans.

Woodbury seems ready to move ahead with plans for a splash pad at the Bielenberg Sports Center. The City Council took an informal poll about the water feature during Wednesday night’s workshop meeting. No formal action was taken, but it seems as though the splash pad has the votes to pass when it comes before the council later. The splash pad has long been considered as part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project. It would be sited north of where the Madison’s Place playground is going to be built, adjacent to where the new field house is being built. Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens said she supports the plan, and a splash pad would be a “good use” of park-dedication funds, which would pay for the water feature. (Estimates have put…

I'm just tired of paying for everybody's entertainment. You want a pool, pay for a pool. I have access to a pool, I pay for it. Why should I also pay for your pool, splash pad, etc. Sounds like wasteful spending to me. Once Eagle Valley Golf Course starts letting me golf for free, then we can consider a free pool.   more ›

Patch Readers Respond to Passage of Gay Marriage Bill

Gov. Mark Dayton’s signature Tuesday didn’t end the heated debate around same-sex marriage.

Whatever side of the debate you fall on, there’s no denying that this week’s passage of a bill legalizing same-sex marriage was a historical moment. Minnesota became just the 12th state to sanction gay marriage when Gov. Mark Dayton signed the bill Tuesday. Patch readers quickly wrote in to share their thoughts on the moment. Eagan Patch reader Kathi Malone echoed the view of legislators who voted yes in seeing same-sex marriage as a civil right: I am so happy that finally gay people will be able to have the civil right to marry. This is truly an American vote for freedom. I applaud Sen Clausen and all other legislators who voted for this historical bill. James N added: Thank you Senator Carlson and the entire MN legislature for extending …

Hey we agree on something! Heterosexual males or homosexual males (or females) must not be allowed to prey on teenagers or anyone else. Remember that that representative was forced to resign by his own caucus. Illegal activity should not be tolerated by the outliers of either group.   more ›

Washington County Library Now Offers eBooks from All 5 Major Publishers

Hachette titles are being added to the Washington County Library’s digital collection.

Want to check out ebooks from David Baldacci, Anita Shreve, Michael Connelly, Stephenie Meyer and James Patterson? Now you can. Digital books under the Hachette publishing house were previously unavailable through Washington County Library, said Chad Lubbers, manager of the R.H. Stafford Branch in Woodbury. “That’s been a big gap for us over the past couple of years,” he said. But Hachette has started working with libraries, and local branches now carry digital titles from all five major book publishers, Lubbers said. The others are Random House, Macmillan, HarperCollins and Simon & Schuster. Titles from Baldacci and Patterson, among others, will continue to show up in the Washington County Library’s e-catalogue in the coming weeks. “Good …

Woodbury Skate Park Celebration Planned for this Weekend

A daylong series of skating events is scheduled at the facility at Ojibway Park in Woodbury.

Woodbury installed new equipment at the skate plaza at Ojibway Park last October. So far this spring, it’s been popular. “It’s been packed every day there hasn’t been snow on it,” said Reed Smidt, Woodbury recreation specialist. A celebration of the skate park is set for Saturday, May 18. The event begins at 10 a.m. and will run into the evening, Smidt said. The day kicks off with the opener for the 3rd Lair Summer Series Competition. “It’s the Little League of skateboarding,” Smidt said. The series is held at several locations across the Twin Cities each summer, and Woodbury is hosting the first event this year, Smidt said. The day continues with several other activities, including: The event is open to everyone and is free to attend, …

UPDATE: Minnesota Senate Approves Same-Sex Marriage Bill, Governor Will Sign

Legislation to allow gay marriage in the state cleared its final hurdle Monday, May 13. With Gov. Mark Dayton expected to sign the bill as soon as tomorrow, Minnesota will become the 12th state in the country to allow same-sex couples to marry.

The Minnesota Senate approved H.F. 1054 Monday, May 13, clearing the way for Minnesota same-sex couples to marry in the state. The 37 to 30 vote, which was seen as the last hurdle for the legislation, makes Minnesota the 12th in the United States to recognize same-sex marriages in state law. Gov. Mark Dayton's office announced a signing ceremony set for 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 14.  Democrats, known locally as the DFL party, hold a 39-28 advantage in the Minnesota Senate.   Debate began shortly after noon Monday, with the Republican Party introducing a pair of amendments to the bill, both of which were voted down by state Democrats, who control the Senate. It quickly moved to speeches invoking personal feelings and relationships surrounding the…

Woodbury Council to Discuss Restaurant at Bielenberg Sports Center

The new restaurant is part of the expansion project currently underway.

The company chosen to provide food service at the expanded Bielenberg Sports Center envisions a full-scale restaurant on the second floor of the lobby. The proposal is part of the Bielenberg Sports Center expansion project. Plans call for a new field house, two-story lobby, outdoor rink and improvements to the existing ice arenas, which will remain in place. Construction is underway. The Woodbury City Council during a workshop meeting Wednesday, May 15, is expected to examine the concept for the new restaurant and concession area. The proposal from Gartner Restaurant Holdings features a “full-service restaurant on the second floor, a concession stand on the first floor and food service carts and potential service in the surrounding fields…
