A Recount Is Possible in the School Board Race

The District 833 School Board will canvass the election results on Tuesday night. The fifth-place school board candidate could ask for a recount.

Five votes separated Sharon H. Van Leer and Molly Lutz in the Nov. 7 District 833 School Board election.

Van Leer received 2,463 votes (8.72 percent) and Lutz received 2,458 votes (8.70 percent).

Van Leer was elected to a four-year term; Lutz was not. A recount could be held, if Lutz requests it, after the School Board canvasses the election results on Tuesday night, according to a news release from the district.

"A losing candidate for nomination or election to a county, municipal, or school district office may request a recount of the votes cast for nomination or election to that office if the difference between the votes cast for that candidate and for a winning candidate for nomination or election is less than one-half of one percent, and the total number of votes cast for the nomination or election of all candidates is more than 400 but less than 50,000," according to Minnesota statute.

The district would pay for the recount.

The board will canvass the vote during a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the Board Room of the District Service Center in Cottage Grove, according to the district's news release.
