First Day of School for District 833: 'Quite Calm'

The 2013-14 school year for South Washington County Schools kicked off Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Aside from a few late buses navigating road construction around the district, things in South Washington County Schools were “quite calm” on the first day of the 2013-14 school year.

Barb Brown, District 833 spokeswoman, said it was a “positive” start to the year and Superintendent Keith Jacobus was out visiting as many schools as possible Tuesday.

Community Reaction

Patch on Facebook asked people how the first day of school went Tuesday morning.

Mike: Lol. Received a text from my elementary school bound boy... His bus driver didn’t know how to get to his school. Anyone remember the Van Halen video for “Hot for Teacher”? I see him being Waldo... lol.

Kim: First day dropping off went well but all the traffic in front of the schools is another story.

Penny: We live in Woodbury but are in the Stillwater school district. My daughter got on the bus right on time this morning at 7:15. Texted me at 8:05 to say they were in Tamarack Village... one mile from our house! Bus driver was busy looking at maps and finally put the call in for directions. School started at 7:50 and I have no idea what time her bus got there, but it was for sure after 8:15. Can we add GPS for buses to the school levy?!

Beach’s Pet Sitting: It went good! First day of 4th grade!

Kim: Interesting bus rides.

Brenda: Wishing Woodbury police could have been out to handle the traffic on Lake Road. Completely backed up and I am sure kids were late to school because of it.

Kris: Awesome! Kids walked to school (refused to let mom walk with)! I have two 5th graders at WE!!! Love love that school.

Denise: Walked our 2nd grader to Liberty Ridge on a nice brisk morning. I love all the new shoes! You can tell that every kid is wearing bright, colorful brand spanking new shoes. By tomorrow, it won't even be noticeable. LOL

Denise: Also, my father-in-law drove a school bus for Woodbury for many years and he would get his route weeks in advance and take several practice runs through his routes just so he got the kids there without any hitches on the first day! Sounds like all the driver should do that!

Food

KSTP was out at Woodbury High School this morning for a story on new lunch menus at schools.

For District 833, that means more international choices and locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Math and Science Academy

While most Woodbury students were in classrooms for the first time this year Tuesday, the Math and Science Academy is starting Sept. 9.

The school’s new building wasn’t ready in time, necessitating the delay.
