Local Teacher Gets Big Surprise

After being nominated by the Carver Elementary School principal, Kira Fischler received $1,000 worth of school supplies Tuesday.

Kira Fischler said she was “overwhelmed” Tuesday, when Office Max and her coworkers at Carver Elementary School surprised her with $1,000 worth of school supplies.

Fischler received the supplies, and a nice new chair, as part of Office Max’s “A Day Made Better” program, which provided classroom materials to 1,000 teachers across the country.

Cheers went up from students as Fischler checked out the items, including a Kindle Fire that she looks forward to using in the classroom.

“I’ll definitely put that to good use,” she said.

Fischler, an English language learner teacher at Carver, said many of her students “don’t always have what they need” in the classroom and was clearly moved that they will have more to work with in the classroom.

Asked what she enjoys most about being a teacher, Fischler said, “The students.”

“Getting to make a difference inside of school and out,” she said.

The average American teacher spends about $1,000 each year on supplies, according to Office Max, and Fischler said she spent approximately $750 last year.

Carver Principal Isis Buchanan nominated Fischler for the award. Below is her nomination letter.

As the recently appointed Principal at Carver Elementary, I am nominating Ms. Fischler for "A Day Made Better" because she has a passion for working with students. Ms. Fischler is one of the English Language Learner teachers at Carver. During my transition to Carver she has been extremely helpful by informing me of student needs at Carver. Ms. Fischler has a strong understanding of content and language standards.  She builds positive relationships with students, staff, and families.  She has volunteered her time to be on the school leadership team which met several times during the summer and she does this because she cares and knows the work needs to be done.

When an opportunity that will benefit our students comes up, Kira works to find out more.  During the upcoming school year Carver will participate in a pilot for the PLUSS Model, which is a research based intervention for English learners.  Kira will be co-teaching with general education teachers as part of this program. Kira called a meeting to inform staff about the PLUSS model and to answer questions staff members may have had.  She is an advocate for students and data shows the hard work of the entire Carver staff has shown huge gains for our English Language Learners.

Kira makes each day better at Carver because she is passionate, knowledgeable, and committed to the work of making sure all children succeed!
