ERHS SADD Event

From East Ridge High School Principal Aaron Harper:

East Ridge Parents and Guardians,   Did you know these national facts about alcohol use in teens?

  • 29.3% of 8th graders have used alcohol.
  • 52.1% of 10th graders have used alcohol.
  • 65.2% of 12th graders have used alcohol.
  • 22% of youth have binge drank.
  • 8%  of teens have drove after drinking.
  • 24% of teens have rode with a driver who had been drinking.
  • Youth who start drinking before the age of 15 are five times more likely to develop alcohol dependence.
What can you do?   Parents play a big role in shaping young people’s attitudes toward drinking. Parents can have either a positive or negative influence.   Parents can help their children avoid alcohol problems by:
  • Talking about the dangers of drinking.
  • Drinking responsibly, if they choose to drink.
  • Serving as positive role models in general.
  • Not making alcohol available.
  • Getting to know their children’s friends.
  • Having regular conversations about life in general.
  • Connecting with other parents about sending clear messages about the importance of not drinking alcohol.
  • Supervising all parties to make sure there is no alcohol.
  • Encouraging kids to participate in healthy and fun activities that do not involve alcohol.
Research shows that children whose parents are actively involved in their lives are less likely to drink alcohol.   ERHS SADD Event on Saturday September 28   Families with children of any age are invited to attend East Ridge High School’s SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Walk 'n Talk around the school’s campus this Saturday.   SADD will have questions along the route to promote quality conversations with your children.
