Deadline for Lions Garage Sale is Sunday

The annual three-day event draws bargain-seekers from the five-state area to Woodbury.

Chris Holthe is the chair of this year’s Woodbury .

But he’s not really into garage sales himself.

“My wife is hosting one and I leave the house,” Holthe said with a laugh.

The garage sale, the Lions biggest fundraiser of the year, draws people from the five-state area and “even as far as Illinois,” Holthe said.

This year’s event runs May 10-12.

Sunday is the deadline for people to register to be part of the official list of garage sale homes. The cost is $30, and those homes are listed with their sale offerings in a directory sold to garage sale attendees. The directories are available at local grocery stores, gas stations and convenience stores.

“Lions Garage Sale” signs identify registered sellers during the sale, and those who register are automatically entered into a drawing for two $250 cash prizes.

Thousands of Woodbury homes participate in the event each year, Holthe said.

“It’s a good community event and we’ve been doing it so long—people really like it,” he said.

The garage sale is “by far” the Lions’ biggest fundraiser of the year, Holthe said, and the proceeds benefit the efforts of the international group and local efforts such as scholarships for Woodbury students, and funds for food shelves and YMCA youth programs, and assistance for residents with sight and hearing needs.
