Midwest Tomato Fest Draws Thousands

Woodbury residents joined the Twin Cities' biggest food fight over the weekend at Afton Alps.

More than 3,000 people braved the sweltering heat Sunday to participate in what was billed at the area's largest food fight—the inaugural Midwest Tomato Fest.

Held at Afton Alps, the event drew a crowd of mostly 20-somethings for music, food and drink—and then a fight featuring more than 25,000 pounds of very ripe tomatoes. That's over 100,000 tomatoes, according to Kevin Walker, one of the event's organizers, who said that 2,300 tickets were sold in advance, but planners expected up to 5,000 attendees by day's end.

Walker and several other recent St. Thomas University grads organized the event and solicited the efforts of volunteers for the event.
