Snipshot: Donating Hair at Woodbury’s Spalon Montage

Robin Solid, of Woodbury, grew her hair out for two years and had it cut Thursday for a donation.

She woke up Thursday morning thinking: “I’m so done with my hair. I’m ready for a spring haircut.”

A few hours later, Woodbury resident Robin Solid was a bit more anxious at Spalon Montage as stylist Tabitha Olson had the scissors ready.

Solid grew her hair out for two years while living in France and decided to donate her hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, a program she found through the American Cancer Society’s website.

“Apparently, my hair will be combined with as many as 20 other donated ponytails and then all will be dyed a uniform shade for the wig that will be created,” Solid said. “My hair meets all the criteria—it is all one length and has not been permanently dyed or color-treated.”

Plus, “they don’t mind if there’s some gray hair in it,” Solid said.

Solid, who said her hair had never been as long as it was Thursday morning, got the idea after one of her friends from California—where she used to live—donated her hair.

“What a neat thing to do, to be able to give it away,” Solid said.

People donating their hair is actually a fairly common occurrence at Spalon Montage, general manager Karen Keller said.

“We’re very fortunate,” she said.

And Olson, the stylist, is one who often cuts hair for such programs. She offered Solid tips on how to donate, relaying issues she’s heard about when people don’t send it the right way.

One other thing about Solid growing out her hair while she was in Europe...

“It never got that hot in France so it didn't bother me,” she said. “And plus, if I didn't go to get it cut I didn't have to struggle to find the right French vocabulary words to be able to describe how I wanted it cut.”
