Washington County Recognizes Woodbury Childcare Provider

Cheryl Bennerotte was honored by the board Tuesday, June 12. Has she looked after your kids? What can you tell us about her?

The Washington County Board on Tuesday recognized Woodbury resident Cheryl Bennerotte for her 31 years as a licensed childcare provider.

The purpose of the presentation was to “publicly acknowledge their achievement and success in their career as early childhood educators and caregivers, and to increase awareness of quality child care.”

Washington County has typically recognized two family childcare providers in conjunction with the Minnesota Licensed Family Child Care Association’s conference and banquet held for family providers throughout Minnesota.

Individuals in the community nominate providers, and these applications are reviewed by an ad hoc committee from the Washington County Child Care Council with representation from the Minnesota Licensed Family Child Care Association.

Bennerotte is licensed to care for up to 10 children ages infant to age 10. Her nomination was unique in that it was made by a former child in her care who now has her own daughter in Bennerotte’s care, according to a release from the county.

“I was in Cheryl’s day care myself growing up. She provided me with the tools necessary to grow into an independent adult,” the nominator wrote. “She provided me and my brother and all the other children in her care with the structure and stability that children so desperately need.”

When asked what her personal philosophy is in working with children and parents, Bennerotte said every "child should be expected to do things they are capable of. Sometimes this does not happen as quickly as adults would like. I am patient and help them learn and then encourage them to do it themselves."

Requirements for potential family child care providers of the year are they have been in the field for at least three years; promote quality child care as a profession and in the community; meet annual state training requirements; have a positive impact on the lives of the young children; and demonstrate professional skills in child care.

Kathy Wenzel, of Hugo, was also honored as Family Child Care Provider at the June 12 board meeting.
