Woodbury Artists Show Their Stuff

The exhibit starts Friday at King of Kings Lutheran Church.

Woodbury resident John Acosta has long thought of holding an art exhibit at .

“I am retiring from the church next February, so I figured this was my last chance,” Acosta said. “I sent out a call for artists and was pleasantly surprised when about 20 people responded.”

It’s the first time the church has held an art exhibit, Acosta said, and he expects it will expand in future years. This year the exhibit features more than 45 pieces from 21 local artists.

People will be able to check out the exhibit from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 12; it also runs the next two weekends.

Acosta, a freelance artist for the past 26 years, teaches art classes and has a downtown St. Paul art studio he hopes to utilize more after retiring from the church.

“When I started working at the church, I noticed a lot of artistic talent among employees and church members,” he said.

One of those employees, church communications coordinator Penny Merritt, is entering her photography in the exhibit and a clay piece she made during one of Acosta’s classes.

“We are excited to show the public our favorite unique pieces all displayed in one place,” said Merritt.

Attendees will find mosaic art, photography, oil and acrylic paintings, wood carvings, fused glass and more.

The exhibit will be open from 4:30-7 p.m. on Aug. 13 and 20, and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 14 and 21.
