Chiropractic care for extremities

When most people think of chiropractic, they immediately think of it as a treatment for neck pain or low back pain. This, in part, is because of the way chiropractic is marketed. It is aimed at people with those issues because they are so common in the general population and over time is what we have become known for.  It is true that most neck and back ailments can be relieved through chiropractic care, but, what if the problem causing the low back pain is not due to an issue in your low back?

For Example:

A bone in the foot or knee may be out of place causing you to carry your weight differently due to a lack of motion in that joint. This is a chain reaction and causes muscles to respond differently as well.  You may not always feel pain in the foot or knee, but it can change the biomechanics of the leg. Over time, this can produce low back pain due to uneven weight distribution between your legs. Low back pain because of changes in the leg or foot usually will not be relieved from spinal manipulations; you must correct the source of the problem- adjusting the foot or knee.

Pain or numbness/tingling that arises in the arms and legs is usually attributed to the spine. If a joint in the spine becomes “stuck” it will irritate the joint capsule (located around the joint). This irritation is usually what the pain stems from. If the irritation or inflammation becomes bad enough, it can compress the nerve and act as a bottleneck- possibly affecting everything that nerve supplies. Since the nerves in the arms and legs originate from the spine, the spine is usually the go-to for extremity pain or tingling. However, other joints in the body can have similar effects on the extremities.

If a bone in the elbow is out of place, it can cause problems in the elbow, forearm or hand. These symptoms will mimic that of a spinal subluxation because the same things are happening to the nerve, just in a different location. However, unless the elbow subluxation is corrected the discomfort is not likely to go away. This can be true for the shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, hips, knees, ankles, and feet as well.
