Game On: Woodbury Woman Wins $50,000

After winning a Roundy's Monopoly-style promotion, Kerri Hanson was given a big check at Rainbow Foods on Thursday.

It might have been her two hungry sons. It might have been a lucky box of potato skins.

Either way, Woodbury resident Kerri Hanson is $50,000 richer.

Hanson on Thursday was presented a $50,000 check from Roundy’s Supermarkets as part of a Monopoly-style promotion with Rainbow Foods and other grocers. (It's similar to the popular version.)

“I just couldn’t believe it,” she said at in Woodbury. “I was kind of shocked. I had to call my neighbor over to verify it.”

The promotion gave people Monopoly game pieces with their purchase of certain items, said John Wood, vice president of marketing and business intelligence with Roundy’s. The game, which runs through Aug. 31, offers prizes ranging from an iPod to a $250,000 home, he said.

“Customers are telling us they love it,” said Wood, who had a real check in addition to the big one for Thursday’s event.

Hanson's winning game pieces—from the yellow part of the Monopoly board—gave her the $50,000. She had the choice of using the money for a new car or taking the cash option. She chose the latter.

“We don’t really need a new car right now,” said Hanson, who has lived in Woodbury for the past 18 years.

She said the family will use some of the money for a new front door—“Practical,” she said—but will likely take a vacation together as well.

The family grew up playing Monopoly, Hanson said, and playing the Roundy’s-Rainbow version was “kind of fun.”

“It’s addictive,” she said.

While she did much of the shopping, Hanson also credited her two sons, Tyler, 20, and Taran, 15.

“They’re big eaters—that’s why we were able to win,” she said.
