Joey’s Pizza in Woodbury: New Name, Same Recipes

Joe Cocchiarella and his wife have owned the pizzeria for the past four years.

The pizza will remain the same.

“Nothing’s changed but the name,” said Joe Cocchiarella, owner of Joey’s Pizza.

Formerly Classic Pizza, the Woodbury shop officially went with the new name Jan. 2.

Cocchiarella and his wife Jean purchased Classic Pizza about four years ago, when it was a “somewhat struggling” establishment, he said.

He said he changed some of the recipes and got involved with the community when he took over, and “it was just time” to make the name change to Joey’s Pizza.

“It’s a part of me,” Cocchiarella said.

Cocchiarella—jointly raised by his grandparents, who came to the U.S. from Palermo, Italy—said he does everything at the pizzeria, including delivery.

“But they yell at me when I do the dishes,” he said.

The pizza shop originally opened in August 2005, Cocchiarella said, and it had been a childhood dream of his to own his own restaurant.

He said customer service is a hallmark of Joey’s Pizza, and he’s gotten to know many of the customers by name.

“They know me. I know them,” said Cocchiarella, who has lived in Woodbury for the past 21 years.

Joey’s Pizza serves hoagies, wings, salads, ribs and pasta, along with other items.

Cocchiarella said the shop’s catering business has been growing by “leaps and bounds,” and Joey’s Pizza has developed a loyal following.

A grand opening is planned for spring. For more information visit its website.
