Angelina's, Brix Leading Poll On Woodbury's Coffee Shops

Whether you prefer cappuccino, cafe latte or simply black, who serves it best?

It's Week 2 of our poll asking folks where they go in Woodbury for their coffee.

So far, and are leading the way. (See the poll below).

But there's still time to vote! Let us know your favorite by 9 p.m. Thursday, March 8.

Local Editor Kris Janisch will determine the winner based on a combination of poll results and the number and enthusiasm of reader reviews on Patch Places. We’ll announce the winner at noon Friday.

After you vote, sign up for the newsletter, to be notified of who wins.

The next poll: Best Places to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day

Brandon March 03, 2012 at 06:04 PM
Looks like the poll is being unfairly co-opted. Good thing it's not scientific but it's still too bad we're not getting a realistic cross-section of the opinion of Woodbury residents.

I love Angelina's! Nice, relaxing, family atmosphere. Coffee drinks and smoothies are hard to beat! We grab yummy takeout a few times a week, too.
Dee Eriksen March 04, 2012 at 02:43 AM
Angelina's has the best coffee for sure. Always fresh and the latte's are nice and creamy. I love everything about Angelina's but since the question is about coffee, It gets my vote. They all know my favorite coffee and my name too!
B March 04, 2012 at 03:24 PM
Angelina's french toast with a cup of coffee...enough said.
Kris Janisch March 04, 2012 at 03:46 PM
Never had the breakfast at Angelina's, I'll have to try it. Brix's crepes are obviously great. The lunch stuff at Angelina's has always treated me right.
Edward March 05, 2012 at 10:48 PM
I've never been to Angelina's, but based on this survey I'm guessing that there's no way to go there and not wait in a horribly long line for that fantastic food. Woodbury Cafe, which received only a few votes, has a very long line (sometimes out the door) if you get there after 9 am on weekends. Their food and service are great (but obviously not as good as Brix or Angelina, per this survey and comments), so I get it, but if WC, which only got a few votes, is that busy then I'm guessing it's nearly impossible to get into Brix or Angelina's. After seeing this survey I'm scared to even try those places . . . . they must be packed all the time. Do those places take reservations? When is the best time to go to avoid the crowds?
Marc Drummond March 05, 2012 at 10:57 PM
Never had to wait too long at either location. You'll be fine. Just give it a try. Both are great!
Marc Drummond March 05, 2012 at 10:58 PM
No online poll will ever be scientific. They are always open to being co-opted. That said, the qualitative comments are pretty interesting. I think somebody could scan through the comments and get some good ideas of places to try.
Renee W. March 06, 2012 at 01:57 AM
"Best cup of coffee" is the key. There seems to be a lot more comments about ambience and food than actual good cups of coffee. I completely agree that Dunn Bros is by far the best coffee anywhere, not just Woodbury.
Renee W. March 06, 2012 at 01:59 AM
The question is "best cup of coffee." Not food or atmosphere or anything else. Just coffee. In which case there's no question: Dunn Bros. I don't know how you can compare anyone's coffee to Dunn Bros. They are the BEST anywhere, not just Woodbury.
Edward March 06, 2012 at 02:09 AM
I agree. If the question is about coffee only, then it's Dunn Brothers. People seem to be rating food, ambience, service as well . . . that's a different question. Dunn Bros. beats Starbucks and Caribou and the rest for coffee, hands down. When I go out for coffee only, it's Dunn Bros. For full breakfast it's Woodbury Cafe.
Eunice B March 06, 2012 at 04:09 AM
This is about coffee people! If you were going to purchase a pound of coffee to make at home. Who does it the best? No syrup, no cup of cream added. Who rules the world of freshest high quality beans and brew? Dunn Bros. This is not about food or atmosphere. This is about java. Pure and simple!
Vicki Strong March 06, 2012 at 02:14 PM
Marc: I think Renee is being sarcastic. I have visited both places because they aren't crowded or noisy. And of course they know their customers by name -- They are frequented by a handful of regulars rather than a throng.
Scott Leach March 06, 2012 at 02:25 PM
Funny! Looks like some strong opinions. The "Brix/Angelinas" responses are clearly cultivated. I've been in both places and there never has been more than a couple people there. Caribou is always packed. Starbucks is always busy. Dunn Bros. seems to have the most real coffee junkies. But hey, If Woodbury Patch doesn't mind being taken advantage of what's a little free advertising for Angelina's and Brix? Good for the Mom and Pop stores! I think those other places can console themselves with all the real customers they have streaming in.
Scott Leach March 06, 2012 at 02:29 PM
What I think Brandon is saying is that you're not even getting a real cross section of Woodbury residents. So you're not seeing "good places to try" you're seeing a managers, owners and employees writing "reviews".
Vicki Strong March 06, 2012 at 02:32 PM
So the question was about coffee (actually Kris asked "Who serves it best?" which could be interpreted as a question about service rather than coffee). And I am reading about food, ambience, wall colors... and custard, crepes, parfaits, pastries, Nutella, cupcakes, ice cream. Now I know why we like coffee so much -- Because most of us dilute its taste with a big side o' sugar served with a smile in a pretty setting! I'm with Eunice -- Dunn Bros. is the best coffee without a doubt, because the coffee is the star of the show, not an afterthought.
Scott Leach March 06, 2012 at 03:39 PM
Ha Ha! Love it.
Susan March 06, 2012 at 04:48 PM
I voted for Angelina’s because of the complete coffee experience that does include the coffee, atmosphere, food, and service. I appreciate that others are casting their votes and posting comments for what they like best. I am, however, surprised by the tone some posters have had recently in support of their favorite place (which does offer great coffee). Vote and tell us what you love about your favorite place. When you criticize the other places (or their supporters) you come across as condescending and defensive.
Joe March 06, 2012 at 07:34 PM
I put my whole support behind Angelina's.. not only is the coffee always hot and Fresh.. the music is perfect, the staff is friendly, the owner Angela is constantly looking for feedback and ways to improve... Not only do they serve the BESTY coffee in town.. But they do it with the small town feel... make you feel as though you are part of the family.. Like your grabbing for another cup in your own home.. except, they wait on you, the place is clean and you are relaxed... Its a Home away from home!!! So the coffee the best... By the way.. When you ask for the Best Place to go for Pizza in Woodbury.. I will give you the same answer!!! Joe

OK, you all got me to try Angelina's last night. We were the only people eating in the place (for 2 hours, but they had one or two takeout customers during that time), so the service was good as there were no competing sit down customers. We had soup (great bread!), latte (OK, not Dunn Bros, but nobody else is), coffee cake, and yogurt smoothie (excellent). The ambiance and music are nice and the value is good. They have free wi-fi. This place is a hidden gem (location doesn't give them exposure to main thoroughfare, as they are tucked into a small mall near corner of VC and 19). I hope they can make a go of it in that location. They'll need a dedicated group of regulars, which it appears they are cultivating in creative ways ;-) Focus: Italian foods and salads, fresh bakery, coffee. Four fork rating for food. Two and a half forks for price (good value). Next stop: Brix.
BJR March 07, 2012 at 03:18 PM
Brix wins hands down for my special mocha and tea. Second place for tea when they aren't available is Caribou. Nobody else has been able to do it as well as they can. Crepes are fabulous, but my favorite is the avocado sandwich - nummy!
snapfaster March 07, 2012 at 10:48 PM
Without a doubt Brix! Great service, friendly staff, but nothing beats the coffee. It doesn't matter which one you pick they all are heavenly.
Jill March 07, 2012 at 10:51 PM
Honestly, it's hard to do a poll like this because most people are going to vote on the coffee place they frequent, even if they haven't tried the others. And even then, most people don't give new shops a fair chance if they already have a niche, which I guess is why it says under the poll "not a scientific poll." I have been to a fair few of these places to truly compare the quality of the coffee and I would vote Dunn Brothers hands down. They small-batch roast their coffee in store and don't burn it like Starbucks, but give it a nice smooth and strong flavor. Their lighter blends are just as strong as the dark blends, just roasted differently and they don't water down their coffee at all. I appreciate the quality and care they give to their coffee and it shows in ALL drinks, not just the lattes. And I'm also a HUGE fan of their cold press coffee. The most caffeine of any other coffee drink and incredibly smooth! For a great cup of coffee, an espresso, or a latte, Dunn Brothers is the place to go.

Brix is the place to go for wonderfully rich smooth coofee and to die for dessserts. If you haven't been there yet, check it out soon. It will quickly become your new favorite place.
Francie Richtsmeier March 08, 2012 at 10:27 PM
Love the coffee...love the location...love the veggie sandwich...love the choc yogurt shake...love the cinnamon rolls... love the turkey crepe...love this place...and you will too...try it...
Renee W. March 09, 2012 at 08:05 PM
How did Starbucks go from 2% to 20% over night? That's a bit suspicious.
Renee W. March 09, 2012 at 08:13 PM
And within 5 minutes Caribou went up from 6% to 16%. I think the survey needs to be thrown out.
Marc Drummond March 09, 2012 at 08:15 PM
Particularly since voting was supposed to have closed last night at 9 p.m. And now there are 4500 votes. It would be an interesting to see a timeline of how many people voted when, because I'm pretty sure there weren't anywhere near that many recently. I know this isn't scientific at all, but yeah, that seems funny. Particularly since almost nobody has commented on Starbucks in the comments.
Adam N March 09, 2012 at 08:41 PM
Something's goofy. The problem for "Patch" is that this just will lead me to completely disregard their "readers choice" stamp of approval. I'm going to be disappointed if I see it in any establishment knowing how easy the process is undermined.
Kris Janisch March 09, 2012 at 08:45 PM
It's not straight votes Adam. Part of it is the comments, seeing how compelling they are and making a decision.
