Report: New Owner for Woodbury's Red Roof Inn

The motel has been beleaguered by police calls in recent years, culminating with a hostage standoff a year ago.

The Red Roof Inn in Woodbury has been sold to Percy Pooniwala, who owns other motels in the area, according to the Woodbury Bulletin.

The motel has had problems with crime in recent years, including a hostage standoff in August 2012 that left one man dead after an officer-involved shooting and another man indicted on 27 felonies, including attempted murder.

The incident sparked outcry in the community about the status of the Red Roof Inn, and Woodbury Public Safety has worked with motel staff to institute measures to curb criminal activity there.

The Red Roof Inn name will remain and major changes aren’t expected for the next few years, but Pooniwala plans to upgrade the security system and continue to take steps to improve safety at the motel, according to the newspaper.

A petition was started last year asking the city to shut down the Red Roof Inn and residents spoke out at Woodbury City Council meetings urging officials to take action.

Property records from Washington County show $1.75 million for the sale, according to the Bulletin.
