Updated: Woody's Roadhouse Closes... What Should Go Here?

After several failed attempts at restaurants, what makes sense in that space?

Several restaurants have tried and none of them have managed to stick at what is now —Throwbacks, Majors...

What do you think would be a good use of that space? Tell us in the comments section below the story.

Responses from the Woodbury Patch Facebook page:

Kristen: A police station since that's where all the police end up anyway.

Jerome: They should just tear it down. Nothing has worked there since Old Mexico closed.

Tristan: In N' Out Burger. I would go insane if we got one.

Debbie: Ruby Tuesday or KFC

Doreen: Do we need a restaurant?

Nicholas: I would agree with Jerome... Everyone who has gone in there has failed. It's not a bad location, I just think there is some bad mojo or something... The layout inside is perfect for a sports bar as well... Here's a tip though... SERVE GOOD FOOD! http://gnawblog.blogspot.com/2012/06/patrick-swayze-wouldnt-appreciate-this.html

Jen: Have its feng shui checked!

David: Just tear it down and the Red Roof Inn. Redevelop the whole area.

I think this location has a lot of potential. Woodbury has so many chain restaurants but they succeed because of the large amounts of families living in Woodbury. I think in order for a restaurant to be successful in this area it would need to be a recognizable name ( to bring people in ) but not as common as a Woodbury favorite such as Applebees (too boring, too common.) I believe a new chain restaurant that is not so familiar to us living in the eastern burbs such as a Texas Roadhouse or a Cheesecake Factory would be a great addition!

I think a hobby shop or arts and crafts store would be great there. The Roof is just a meth lab in disguise.

I'd love to see a Texas Roadhouse!! PS- we love Wild Child too ;)

How about hobby lobby store since both manakto and Rochester has it but we twin cities don't have it

OK Simon, you and one of your buddies meet in the parking lot and I'll come and do video for Patch. (;

Glad you enjoyed it! We always do our best.

A music venue or a small dinner theatre. Put some freaking arts in Woodbury that isn't concerning High Schoolers
Kris Janisch August 29, 2012 at 05:47 PM
Not a bad idea Mr. P. Certainly is space for it.

Carol, I actually worked there when it was Ol' Mexico and THE place to go in Woodbury. Besides the terrible reputation of the Red Roof Inn (it has never really been good) there is the fact that the area is completely flooded with national chains, and fast food. Something locally unique COULD thrive if someone put enough TLC into the entire property again. It has zero curb appeal. If not something family oriented, it really was a great bar and music venue as Throwbacks.
Kris Janisch August 30, 2012 at 02:09 PM
Hey Tracy, do you know why Ole Mexico closed?

Microbreweries are on a huge upswing right now, and there is nothing in the East metro (save Lift Bridge in Stillwater). If the area can be reconfigured, that space would be perfect for a brewpub or brewery & tap room.
Kris Janisch August 30, 2012 at 03:17 PM
Maybe I'm showing my bias here Jason, but that sounds awesome.

I'd leave the bar and set up the who brew process on that upper level area where the pool tables were... who's in?
Mr.P August 30, 2012 at 08:59 PM
Second. That would be a perfect piece for Woodbury. Even if it was something like the Milwaukee Area has with "Water Street Brewery"

I'm pretty sure The After Midnight Group www.theaftermidnightgroup.com has bought the space. They own Cowboy Jacks, Cowboy Slims, the Cabooze, the Joint, and the Saloon locations around the twin cities. To them I say Good Luck!

Interesting story about a restaurant franchisee looking to move into the Twin Cities...Might this be the next (and hopefully lasting) use for the Roadhouse? http://www.restaurantnews.com/wingstop-flies-into-minneapolis/?utm_source=August+24%2C+2012&utm_campaign=Newsletter-August-24&utm_medium=email

I also heard that! An old co worker of Woody's Roadhouse told me that the building was definitely already sold to a company otherwise they wouldn't of closed Woody's so early. He said its going to be a Cowboy Jack's they are just waiting to completely finish theyre downtown location first. Perfect location for it though! Cant wait

That would surprise me if Afternidnight group bought the place. The have a track record of picking great locations. Here's why this place failed: Too big, too expensive, bad ownership.

How about locating a Senior Center there, if Red Roof crime issues & road access problems can be resolved? Check zoning. And it should be a private sector venture, or non-profit operation. Otherwise, a Consignment shop for Veterans offering free furniture, clothing, etc from donations of items or cash by the community. Lots of vets on that site may take care of the crime spree at RRInn too.
Kris Janisch August 31, 2012 at 04:56 PM
Good ideas everyone. And I've got an email in to the After Midnight folks, but I'll probably be following up with the Red Roof Inn shooting the rest of today.
Mr.P August 31, 2012 at 06:39 PM
I think it's too big for a Wing Stop. Plus I think it's a bad move, Buffalo Wild Wings has a hold in the wings department in this area
Justin D September 02, 2012 at 02:50 PM
Off topic.. but what ever happened to Melting Pot coming to Woodbury?
Kris Janisch September 02, 2012 at 02:51 PM
Hadn't heard that one Justin. What is Melting Pot?
S October 05, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Get a priest for an exorcist.
Jimmy Joe October 15, 2012 at 09:52 PM
Hey Kris, Any word from After Midnight on if they purcahsed the place? And if so, what the plan is? I work in a building adjacent to the property (NOT the RR Inn). While Throwback and Woody's were not perfect, the location was awesome for our happy hours. Now we need to actually drive to get a drink.
Kris Janisch October 15, 2012 at 10:01 PM
I've been in touch with those folks Jimmy, but they weren't ready to say anything as of a couple of weeks ago. I heard there's some working going on there now. I'll stop by tomorrow and see if I can pry any info out of the crews.
Kris Janisch October 18, 2012 at 11:34 PM
Good timing ZGS, just posted something today: http://patch.com/A-yLjh
Kris Janisch October 18, 2012 at 11:40 PM
Cool. Can't say I've been to one.

If The After Midnight Group need volunteers to help the new staff practice their new jobs, sign me up. I love free food & drinks.
