Life Was Too Short for Braedon Hyland

The death of a student from East Ridge High School, Braedon Hyland.

October 13, 2011.

It was an ordinary school day. Students went to school, played sports, and did homework. And like any other day, students went on Facebook.

But unlike any other day, the news feed was overwhelmingly filled with statuses about a death.

I did not personally know him, but I know that he was a pretty popular guy at . He was one of those people who everybody knew or at least heard of. He was an avid hockey player, and a much-loved friend.

On October 10, 2011, Braedon Hyland got into a serious car accident, leaving him in critical condition. This in of itself was a big topic at both East Ridge and ; pretty much everybody had heard of this car crash. I don't think anybody anticipated that it would result in Hyland's death.

For a moment on Facebook, the news feed was not filled with complaints about how much homework people had, or insincere compliments on people's pictures. It was filled with heartfelt messages, pictures, and prayers in honor of Braedon Hyland.

Tomorrow was planned to be a "pink out" to support Breast Cancer awareness, but it has been changed to a "black out" to show respect toward a regretfully shortened life.

It has been proven again that life is short and the future can not be known. Every day is a blessing.

Braedon Hyland was a son, brother, athlete, and friend.

Rest in peace.
