City Offers Deal on Shade Trees

The annual Woodbury tree sale is on again. One resident says she'll be first in line to pick up her new shade tree.

Every year for the last three years Sally Johnston has planted a tree in the backyard of her Woodbury home.

“A few years ago we lost one of the largest shade trees in our yard when a storm came through and we miss having it back there,” Johnston said. “That tree kept our back bedrooms cool during the summer, so we certainly miss it.”

In an effort to replace the shade, Johnston has planted two large shade trees and plans to purchase another at an upcoming tree sale hosted by the City of Woodbury.

“The city offers rather mature trees at a good rate,” she said. “I don’t want to wait for a little sapling to grow, so buying a mature tree makes more sense to me. I know it's just a tree, but I'm pretty excited about it."

The City of Woodbury is currently accepting payments for shade trees so residents can plant them this fall.

“The fall planting season in Minnesota is generally from September to late October,” said Woodbury City Forester Dave Witzel said in a recent Woodbury City Update. “This time is ideal because it gives the roots time to develop before winter.”

Orders, with payment, are due by Friday, Sept. 7. Residents must pick up trees on Saturday, Sept. 22, between 9 and 11 a.m. Cost is $70 per tree, including tax, with a limit of two trees per household.

Residents can choose from five species of trees:

  • Northwood maple
  • Nannyberry
  • Ironwood
  • Northern Pin oak
  • Showy Mountain ash

Trees will come in a No. 10 container, which is approximately 12 inches in diameter and weighs 35 to 50 pounds. Trees are approximately 5 to 7 feet tall and 1-inch caliper.
