Weather permitting, of course.

The Public Works Department expects street sweeping to begin later this month. Once that’s complete, crews will begin hydrant flushing, according to a release from the city.

Street Sweeping

Prior to street sweeping, residents are asked to sweep or shovel materials from their boulevards into the roadway. This will help ensure crews can remove sand built up from winter plowing.

Also, people should remove vehicles and other obstructions—portable basketball hoopes, for example—from the street when crews are in their neoighborhood.

Street sweeping will take place over the course of about five working days.

Hydrant Flushing

Once the street sweeping is finished, fire hydrant flushing will begin.

Utility crews flush hydrants in the spring and fall each year to ensure hydrants are operating properly and to remove rust, sand and other sediments from the underground piping systems.

During the work, tap water may be discolored for a few minutes, though it is safe to drink. Residents may want to check for signs of discoloration before using the water to wash clothes.

If the water is discolored when the tap is turned on, continue running the water until it again is clear. If stains from the water appear on laundered clothes, do not put the clothes in the dryer, as this will set the stains. Washing clothes again in cold water should remove any stains, according to the release.
