Woodbury Issues Warning About Lawn Watering

There are progressive fines in place for those who violate the policy, which is in effect year-round.

Woodbury officials on Thursday issued a reminder to residents that the city does enforce its watering policy.

The policy is in effect year-round, and follows an odd-even schedule. Watering is also banned between noon and 5 p.m. each day.

The reminder from the city asked residents and businesses to consider two things before watering their lawn.

Odd-Even

Determine if it's your day to water the lawn, based on the odd/even schedule. This means if your home or business address ends in an odd number (1, 3, 5, etc.) you may water your lawn on odd-numbered calendar days each month. Likewise, if your address ends in an even number (0, 2, 4, etc.) you may sprinkle on even-numbered days of the month.

Time of Day

Check the clock. Lawn sprinkling is permitted only before noon and after 5 p.m. regardless of whether it is "your day" to water.

The city issues about 500 watering citations each year, City Engineer Klayton Eckles . The fines are progressive: $25 for the first offense, $50 for the next and so on. City officials generally monitor homes more closely as the days get warmer and dryer, he said.

Several cities have similar measures in place, Eckles said, and the policy helps keep infrastructure costs down. Woodbury is entirely serviced by well water; costs $1 million to construct, he said.

Part of the issue lies with the growing number of new homes in Woodbury, Eckles said.

“People are trying to establish their grass and we see pretty high water usage because of that,” he said then.

The city does have certain places—the Bielenberg Sports Center fields and Eagle Valley Golf Course, for example—that are exempted from the policy, which .
