Meet Molly, the Newest Drug 'It Girl'

Learn about the new and dangerous drug Molly and what criminal penalties she carries.

Have you heard of Molly? Chances are that you heard someone ask where Molly is either in a song or even during a Madonna concert.

So we thought you might be curious about what Molly is and what criminal consequences she can invoke.

Molly is a relatively new drug that is allegedly a purer form of ecstasy. It is dubbed purer because of the presence of MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine, a modified methamphetamine).

Molly comes in tablet form and looks like it could be a children’s vitamin, here is a link to her picture. She’s cute at first blush, looks totally harmless. Well, looks can be deceiving.

You can imagine that due to its appearance it is a popular drug among a younger crowd. Not to mention the fact that it causes a rush of serotonin to the brain resulting heightened senses and positive feelings. University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy describes Molly as causing “feelings of empathy, warmth, euphoria, and closeness.”

However, U of MN goes on to describe what happens after those good feelings wear off. Molly alters levels of adrenaline and dopamine in the body and can disrupt serotonin creation to the point of causing permanent damage, depression, and even organ failure. Its purer status can also cause damage a lot faster than less potent club drugs because of its high concentration of MDMA.

Molly isn’t sounding so good anymore is she?

Add the fact that possession of Molly can lead to felony drug charges and she’s looking downright ugly. Molly is a Schedule I drug, which means it has no accepted medical use or benefit and is in the same category as LSD, cannabis, and heroin. Schedule I drugs carry harsh penalties and potentially hefty jail time.

There are a variety of ways to manufacture Molly and she appears to be popping up everywhere. Parents beware; she seems to be popular at both high school and college campuses. We predict that criminal defense attorneys will be dealing more and more with Molly.

If you are thinking of taking of spin with Molly just know the consequences, her temporary high doesn’t seem to be worth the long term physical effects and criminal penalties.
