Acne in Adult Women

Dr. Tina Shaffer explains why acne can be so frustrating for adult women, and what can be done about it!

Acne can be very frustrating for women in their adult years. Here are a few of the more common questions I get about adult women and acne. Remember, the best advice I can give is always that you to see your dermatologist for a skin consultation.

Q. Why do adult women struggle with acne?

A. Fluctuating hormones play a big role in adult acne in women. Many acne products are too harsh for adult skin. We all want to look our best and acne plus wrinkles is frustrating!

Q. Why is it so important to customize treatments for patients?

A. Adult women often have sensitive, combination skin. Many women actually have acne and another condition like rosacea making treatment challenging. Also, many adult women are looking for alternatives to long term antibiotics control their acne. Women who are pregnant or nursing need different treatments.

Q. What are the best treatments for acne in women?

A. The best treatment is designed specifically for an indvidual patient’s needs and condition. Treatments often include topical retinoids, which also help photoaging, gentle exfoliators like glycolic acid, topical antibiotics and hormonally based treatments. I optimize skin care regimens and use lasers for scarring.

Q: Any other advice?

A: See a dermatologist. There is no substitute for professionally trained skin care experts. We can help your skin stay clear and look its best.
