Silent Heroes of Life

Who captures the sun's energy and turn it into food?

I love the work of Enzymes—they are on duty throughout the body.  They are mixed in with saliva to help the teeth soften food.  In industry, enzymes are used to make cheese and beer and added to laundry detergent.

But almost every day I’m into Bananas.  The banana plant is referred to as a tree, but it is a large Herb.  There are about 100 different banana varieties.  My noggin did not know this.

The enzymes in my mouth will never be the same now, chompin’ down on a Chiquita from Kowalski’s, Cub or Rainbow.

Let’s face it, we can’t afford to be fussy, I’m usually happy to eat almost anything, but the variety down here… nutmeg and apple flavored, even a touch of lemon or star fruit in the bananas available here, called manzanos (stout, sweet, meaty) or ninos (apple-bananas) leaves me legless, like a worm. It is now, for me, like offering a Minnesotan the mundane “Red Delicious."

I’m calling this Herb—a banana with a sense of humor.  Well, I aim to find out about this banana gang from the plant kingdom & tasting more from the PR mob.

Now, you may think the banana herb’s life is to bask in the sunshine all day long, soaking up as much light as it can. Ah! Sounds like bliss. They are no slouch. Their leaves are positioned so that they don’t block out the light of other leaves and their leaves do the breathing for the plant, absorbing carbon dioxide.  The waxy coating stops the herb from losing water.

I’ve got some job here—a gutsy herb critic, churning up grub like the banana and then mapping out investigative reporting…

Ya’ll are quite a crew of high brow banana elitists who are held in high regard…so, someone’s got to reveal the banana truth.

Well, Janisch told me this. Before he came on the scene in Woodbury, the world must have been a dull place. He‘s like a big Enzyme—making chemical reactions happen in Woodbury, digesting the big picture, and then like a wrecking crew, stripping everything down to its raw state (while being constantly aware of its final destination; the large intestine).
