Drawing Boundaries

Redistricting in Woodbury

Next week testimony will begin for the Republican and Democratic proposed redistricting boundaries. These hearings are taking place at several locations around greater Minnesota, as well.

Relying on testimony, political input, and past thru present census data, a panel of judges has been appointed to figure out where these new boundary lines should be drawn. It should be an interesting process that will culminate in a final redistricting plan in February 2012.

The boundaries are important because this determines what area one may be represented by at the county, state, and federal level. So saying that, I am testifying on the Woodbury and East Metro area.

I have some specific concerns about redistricting and would prefer lines similar to where they currently exist.

Perhaps, another idea may be to split Woodbury into Eastern and Western halves with Radio and Pioneer Drive being the dividing line, with precinct 13 being included in Western Woodbury.

I have some serious reservations about “peicemealing” Woodbury into more than two districts because I believe that it takes away from our growing suburbs ability to influence the decision making process at the county, state, and federal levels.

Attached is a precinct map for Woodbury, borrowed from the City of Woodbury site. I am hoping to hear comments from citizen’s in the community before I testify next week so I can give an accurate assessment of what not only I, but also what the good folks in Woodbury think about how the redistricting lines should be drawn through Woodbury.
