Third Rail of Politics

The politics of social security and medicare.

“I have never seen the governing process so broken."

—Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), on Senate floor. July 2011

I am so tired of hearing this fallacy about how Social Security and Medicare caused our problems and now they have to be cut.

Instead of eliminating the 2001 tax cuts that benefited billionaires, big oil and big business, our legislators would rather cut the meager benefits for the seniors, the working class, veterans, and the disabled.

It is like someone is driving around in a cul de sac and keeps putting the car into the ditch. You come along and pull them out with the tow truck then they drive around circles again till they go in the ditch and you once again pull them out.

Well, how many times will we continue to let our legislators drive our economy into the ditch through their insistence on tax breaks for billionaires, big oil, and big businesses that ship our jobs overseas, before we stand up and say enough is enough?

Those few people that benefited from the economic downturn can and should start paying their fair share.

Some folks just want government to leave them alone and let them have their liberty, which I think all folks generally accept. The problem stems by the process of obtaining that liberty.

Obviously, someone had to contribute to society for liberty to be obtained, or a viable option. So that leaves one to wonder: If a person wants complete liberty, then what has that individual sacrificed as their fair share that allowed that liberty to be an option in the first place?

That’s why billionaires, big oil, and big businesses that ship our jobs overseas should contribute their fair share.

They want the benefits (liberty) derived from America by the seniors, hard working folks, veterans, and disabled of this country, but don’t think they should make a sacrifice equal to what these other citizen’s made.

Their position is not justice, equality, desert, or fair to the citizens of our community, In addition, freedom has never been free, unless of course you are among the group in the mindset of supporting billionaires, big oil and big business in America.
