Gym Woes

A story about a gym experience.

I have been trying to make sure that I get to the gym as often as I can to try and lose my 19 month old baby weight. This has been a somewhat difficult task since I have a police officer husband that works unpredictable hours, since the bad guys don't work just 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

In addition I have five children, four of whom are school age and then my baby who is just 19 months and a total momma's girl. Because I am a stay-at-home mom, baby hasn't been exposed to a daycare environment or any place where there are a lot of children. I have taken her to the gym childcare a few times with her siblings to try and help acclimate her to the surroundings.

I decided the other day—after seeing her eagerly want to go in—that I would try taking her there alone while the kids were at school and I had an appointment with my trainer. I brought her to the gym with plenty of time to spare so I could make sure she was OK; we walked in, got her checked in and then she began whining and wanted me to pick her up. I obliged and carried her in through the two doors.

I put her down, and with some encouragement she went over and started to play on a multi-colored play apparatus. Two other little girls were watching her with curiosity and one 4- or 5-year-old boy was laying on one side. As baby got off the play deal she stood up and the boy stood in front of her, and I am thinking OK, this boy wants to say hi to her or be nice. Uhh nope! He pinched her face quite hard and took off running while Baby stood there and cried. So much for a non-traumatic time.

I went tearing back in to rescue Baby. Luckily, the staff responded appropriately and tracked down the little hellion and made him come over and apologize to the both of us and take a time out. I was able to help Baby calm down with the help of a wonderful staff member and get to my workout. I spent my workout waiting to get called down to childcare and worrying the whole time that someone was bullying Baby.

When I returned, I was delighted to see that Baby was doing much better and playing with another little girl.

I just don't understand how a kid that age thought it was OK to pinch a baby. None of my kids at that age would have pinched a baby or any other kid for that matter. Honestly, the thought crossed my mind to have one of my kids hunt the hellion down and see if he liked to be pinched by an older kid.

We will see how today goes on our return trip to the gym. Hopefully no more bratty kid incidents!
