Pity the December Birthday(ers)

If you have a birthday in December, you know what this post is about.

If you have a birthday in December, you understand what I'm about to say.

The rest of the lucky bunch don't get it and need to be reminded of how much it really, really... (insert favorite word here) to have a b-day in December.

As a kid growing up in South Dakota, having a birthday in December meant I didn't have parties. Um... what parent is going to drive in a snow storm to my house?

So my mom did what any parent living 15 miles from the nearest town would do—she held my 10th birthday in July. It was fun... and yet lame at the same time. I still give my mom kudos for trying.

And then I started dating my now hubby who thought having TWO celebrations in December was just one too many, so he tried to combine them. You know the "double whammy" present.

"I'll just buy you one big present, okay?"

"No."

"But it will be really nice and you just tell me what you want." (ugh, men)

"No."

Oh, he tried, dear reader, he tried very hard. But after 15 years together, he gets it.

Last night, we went to Les Miserables for my birthday, something I strongly hinted at him since we landed in Minnesota.

"Do you need an actual present? Or are the tickets good enough?" (the 'younger' me always wanted a present to unwrap - call it what you want.)

"No, honey, the tickets are just great and I appreciate you sitting through this with me."

If that's not love... I don't know what is.

My sister was born on December 23—her first born's date is December 21. They have it worse than me—there really isn't a separation between birthday and holiday. And those of you born on December 25—God Bless You.
