Editor's Notebook: Thanks, Oakdale!

Thanks for making my last year and a half immensely rewarding and fun.

I typically use this column to share quick tidbits I pick up at city hall and around town, but today I have some personal news.

This is my last day with Oakdale Patch, as I’m moving into a different job next week. I’d be remiss if I didn’t take the opportunity to give a huge “thank you” to the Oakdale community for making my job an absolute pleasure.

When I came into this position in October of 2010 I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’d always worked at established newspapers, most recently one that had been around for 50 years. Now, I’d have a few months to launch a new site in a city I knew little about. I was worried about how I’d be received. Would people talk to someone from a news outlet they’d never heard of? Would the site gain readership, or would I be met with indifference?

In hindsight, I had nothing to worry about. I was blown away—and continue to be—by the responsiveness, openness and kindness of everyone I’ve come in contact with as editor, from city officials to businesspeople to readers and contributors on the site.

From city staff members, I’ve gotten quick calls back and responses to information requests; from business owners, a willingness to take time to share their stories with me; and from readers, many notes of encouragement along the way that have been incredibly meaningful.

I can’t thank you all enough. It’s certainly bittersweet leaving Oakdale Patch, but I’m excited to take on new challenges, and I trust the site will fall into good hands.

Patch is in the process of identifying the next permanent editor for the site, but in the meantime guest editor and senior regional editor will be taking the reins.

Thanks again for making my last year and a half immensely rewarding and fun. Hopefully, I'll still see you around town every now and then!
